lira wo at Milwaukee.
At the convention of tho Nntlonnl
Federation of Women's Clubs at Mil
waukee tho "color lino" was drawn and
now tho question of the eligibility of
colored women to white women's clubs
Is being discussed throughout the laud.
The "color lino" question was precipi
tated In this wny:
Some months ugo.the secretary of the
nntlonnl federation sent to tho New
Era Club, of Iloston, an Invitation to bo
presented ut the Milwaukee conven
tion. The president and founder of this
club Is n colored woman, Mrs. .Josephine

vitation was extended lu good faith
she went to Milwaukee to attend thu
convention. The otllccrs of tbo federa
tion hud not known that the New Km
Club wns one for colored women nnd
when Mrs. Itullln appeared at the con
vention there was opposition to her ami
her club from the Southern delegates
and from Southern women living In the
North.
The "bosses" of the convention sought
to shelve the annoying question by re
turning the fees of the New Era Club
on the plea thnt the Hoard of Directors
had not approved of tho action of the
President lu having nccepted them. By
this act the ntllliatlou.of the New Era
Cub with the federation was denied
nnd Mrs. Itullln found herself without
tho right of representation. She Is de
termined, however, to have a more for
mnl decision In the matter nnd hna
taken legal advice. The question will)

vention and the Massachusetts State
Federation, with which the New Ern
Club Is atllllated, will support Mrs.

up of the federation.
