Ami ho had nlwnys lived Iu thu city, and the only, itnlmnln ho had ovor seen wcro hordes, dogs nnd cats. Hut he hnd heard of leopards, beciinso ono of his boy friends hnd told him nil about them nnd how thoy had spots on them nnd they could climb trees nud eat people. Well, ono day ho. went to tho country, and In course of time his cousin, who was older than he, helped him Into an applo treo aud then went Into tho houso to get Bomethlug maybojt wns uu apple. Jimmy was rather a!nnncd at bolng left nlono In tho tree, but ho managed to stay there. Suddenly ho Baw a beaHt como prowling up tho road. It was about tho slzo of n leopard, as ho Imag ined, and It vas covered with spots even larger than a leopard would have, so It miiKt bo (thought Jimmy) a very awful kind of leopard. And, to mako things worso thin leopard had a pair of horns, and largo, ferocious-looking cars, and nvcry now nnd then It roared llko this: "Moo-oo, moo-oo." Jimmy was frightened half to death. But he had tho slim hope that the beast would go away without seeing him. Ob, horrible Tho animal ennio right to the tree, and put Its head right up among tho branches, and began to sniff. Then it nto an applo. Jimmy was suro that In a moment It would climb tho treo after him, ho ho got up to the top of. tho tree, though how he did It ho couldn't tell till next day. lie was weak and whlto with fenr when ho reached tho top branch. Tho dreadful beast now came close to tho trunk and began to nib up and down. Now ho weuld pilng up tuto the treo, beyond a doubt! But Just as Jimmy thought ho was ciouchlng for a spring he saw his undo como out of tho house, and he scream ed to him, "Oh, Uncle Kd, savo me, save met This leopard la going to eat niol" Now, some upclcs would have thought tho mater a huge Joke, but Undo Kd waa not that kind. Io knew that to little Jimmy tho horned beast was as bad as tho most terrible leopard that ever roamed the Jungle, and so he went over to tho tree and said, "My boy, you are safe while I am here, because, Iu the first place, this kind of leopard can't climb a tree; and, In tho second place, It Isn't a leopard at all, but a cow; and, in tho third place, It la Daisy, our pet cow; and If you take my word for It you can ride on her back as If she were a horse." There was something in Undo Ed's voice that had a very calming effect on Jimmy, and Inaldo of two minutes tho dreadful leopard that had como to cat him was turned Into a good-natured old cow, and ho rodo her nil around tho place, holding on to Undo Ed's hand. Now Jimmy Is grown up and has a Jimmy of his own. but ho will never forget tho horror of that flvo minutes with u horned leopard. Outlook. The Care of Clothes. No self-respecting child but knows The proper thing to do with clothes) They should be hung upon the chair At night, and not thrown anywhere. Chicago Record. Couldn't Fool Her. Speaking of kindergartens for colored children calls to mind the experience of a "befo de wah" matron, who was teaching one of the little darkles on her plantation how to spell. The primer she used was a pictorial one, and over each word waa its ac companying picture, and Folly glibly spelled o-x, ox, and b-o-x, box, etc. But the teacher thought that she was mak ing right rapid progress, so she put her land over the picture and said: "Polly, what does o-x spell?" "Ox," answered Fojly, nimbly. "How do you know that It spells ox, Polly?" "Seed his tall," replied the apt Polly. Dost Baths. Some birds use water only, some wa ter and dust, while others prefer dust and no water In their toilet Birds are not only nice in the choice of bath wa ter, but also very particular about the quality of their toilet dust Wild ducks, though feeding by salt water, prefer to bathe in fresh-water pools, and will fly long distance In land to running brooks and pond. &P where they preen and dress their feath ers In tho early hours of the morning. Sparrows batho often, both In 'water nud In 'dUBt They aro not so particu lar about tho quality of wnter as about the quality of tho dust. The city spar row must tako a water bath where he can get It. Road dust, tho driest and llncst possible, suits him best. Par trtdges prefer dry lonms They like to scratch out tho boII from uuder tho grass, nnd fill their feathers with cool earth. Most birds are fond of ashes. Tako a walk some early morning across a Held where bonfires havoburucd, and boo the numbers of winged creatures that Hho suddenly from tho nsh heaps. A darting form, a small cloud of ashes, aud tho bathers disappear. A Girl's Accomplishments. Some one has suggested twclvo things that every girl can learn beforo she Is 12. Not every ono can learn to play or slug or paint well enough to give pleas uro to her friends, but tho following "accomplishments" aro within every, body's reach: Shut tho door, and shut it softly. Keep your own room In tasteful or der. Ilavo nn hour for rising, and rise. r Learn to mako bread as well as cake. Never let a button stay off twenty four bouts. AlwayB know wiicro your things are. Never let a day pass without doing something to. make somebody comfort able. Nover come to breakfast without a collar. Nevpr go about with your shoes un buttoned. Speak clearly enough for everybody to understand. Never fidget or hum so as to disturb others. Never fuss or fret i i STAR DtSTANCEa Aro eo ICnorinons as to He Practically Inconceivable. The stars nro suns nnd they look like, mero shining points of light becauso they nro so far away. Tho nearest Is so far that a cannon-shot tired In Ad am's tlmo from tho Harden of Eden, and flylug continually with uudlniln ished speed, would oven now hardly havo started ou Its Journey. It would bo as If u train bound for another town had Just pulled well out of tho Btntlon. On a summer evening you may sco Arcturus high up In the south or south west In Juuo or July, and further down In tho west in AuguBt or Septem ber. You will know It by Its red color. Thnt star hos been (lying straight ahead ever since astronomers began to observo It t such a speed that It would run from New York to Chicago In u small fraction of a minute. You would have to bo spry to rlso rrotn your chair, put on your hat and over coat and gloves, go out on the street while It was crossing .the Atlantic Ocean from Now York to Liverpool. And yet If you should watch that atar all your life, nnd live as long as Mothuselah. you would not bo nblo to sco that it moved at nil. Tho Journoy it would mako In a thousand years would bo as nothing alongside Its distance. Many, perhaps most, of tho stars nro really much larger and brighter than tho sun. Canopus, as It appears to us, Is tho second brightest star In tho heav ens. It never rises In our northern lati tudes ; to see It well you would havo to go at least as far south as tho gulf States. Although It shines to us only nn n verv brlaht star. It is really thou sands of times as bright as the sun. If our earth should fly as near to It as It Is to tho sun, tho wholo sky would seem to be ablaze, nnd everything com bustlblo on tho earth's surface forcBts, houses, and' fences would bo burned by tho fervent heat as If thrown into a hot Are. But tho dlstanco of Canopus is Immeasurably great, so that astrono mers havo not been nblo to learn any thing certain about It. The most In-" foresting conclusion from this Is that Canopus, although It Is only a star In tho sky, Is really thousands of times brighter than tho sun. A good story Is going tho rounds about uow two prospectors had salted a mine In tho Galena district In order to rob a couple of rich widows, which re sulted In the aforesaid widows becom ing much wealthier. Tub prospectois had spent their last cent In digging a bole In the ground to the extent of sixty feet without striking anything but yellow clay. But ono of them knew of two rich widows who were Just spoiling to have their money sunk in a mine. Accordingly they spent two nights In salting their mine. They hadn't sufficient money to buy some paying dirt, but they stole this from a neighboring mine and hauled a lot of it over to dump Into their mine. Wheu several tons of this "paying dirt" bad accumulated In the bottom of their mlno the widows were sent for, and while one was talking about the in creasing value of the district the other was dumping out all kinds of lead and sine ore before their astonished eyes. The widows bought a half Interest In that bolo In the ground for f 1,500. Tho next day there was no more ore In tho shaft and the fellows declared they would dig no longer. Then the widows bought the other half interest at a total cost of 12,000, and the men hiked out for Missouri, laughing in their sleeve. But the women, blindly believing that there must be more ore, continued with the digging, aud at a depth of ten addi tional feet struck the richest vein of tho whole belt, realizing $75,000 in less than one year's time.
