New l'orlt correspondence: A11I3LY iln fnMi Ions late In April show ho few com mon characteristic an they nre now. Wnlst menmire In Inrge. The kowii shown In the neeompnnylnK small picture was Illustrative. Its skirt was plenteil nil around nnil was iiutrlm tned. The hoillre was embroidered nil over In pnle lavemler, ami the Inyer yoke win pnle Inveniler tnffetn stitched nnd embroidered In white. This bodice's Jabot arrangement was not n typlenl one ex oopt in the sense that eunlly pretty nov elties nre ns plentiful ns Ingenious dc- HXAMI'MCH HI-.T I'01t vices can make them. It was ideated white chiffon held by black velvet bauds. Two other cloth gowns nppenr In these pictures, and are Informntory ns to what fashion leaders are taking up. A mixed gray cloth comes tlrst In the next Illus tration. Hlack embroidery and black braid trimmed It, and velvet wns gather ed for Its bodice belt. The other cloth gown wns the second model of the con cluding llliistrntlou, and was found In a very delicate putty shnde. On the skirt was strny embroidery in very pnle green, while the embroidery of the bodice was green silk soutiiche. Yoke and vest weie idilrred roue chiffon. Sleeves mid belt were of the plnlu goods. The difference between these two belts was wide, but hardly begins to suggest the real situa tion ns to Ih-IIm, They nre elaborate. Ducks mid linens are being treated with nil the elaboration charnclerlstie of mod els in silk and expeusUe transparent inn- IItI KQUAI.I.Y SU.M.M1.KY, AND terlul. A white linen duck It laid In pleats and stitched heavily In red .Ilk. A khaki gowu showed n box-pleat. A lot of ktltchlng showed mi while linen bunds that were generously dikposed in scroll lugs all over the gown, l.lueu in untural tolor, In blue and In bright red seems likely to be the most popular mnteilal for kiimmer wear of the simpler kind. Turn to the kecoud dro of the lirst luuv picture, and u rcptvkcutnthe while linen duck Is seen. It was freely bunded with tine red bilk cording, which also outlined the kcnllop. Collar aud vest were white pleated lawn, Hcsldcs this the nrtUt put linen color khaki suit. Collar and revers were embroidered In white wash silk, the ruffs had klmllar finish with white linen folds added, vest and collar werv bright green mull, and belt and bow were black vehei. Though the duck or khakt sum mer suit need not be quite as elaborate at Utete, they should at the very laat be up to recent styles In cut and finish. Tk same Is true of silk poplins, which prom Ise to have summer rogue. They may bo made up In fanciful fashion, but nre at their hcif along simple lines that reflect nc wfnshlons In their less elaborate ex pression. A pretty gown In this goods holds the right of this picture. Its color was pale laren'der. Htftchlng and em broidery In pnle green and white finished Its Jnckct fronts, and collar, cuffs and belt were black velvet. A fluffy lace front wns sketched with it, and a front of that churncter is a wise addition to Biich a dress. I'nnno surahs of delicate Persian color" Ings arc n chungc from India silks, they come In patterns much like those of the India silks and arc madelip for the same class of wear. One tasteful dress from this stuff hnd Ivory white pnuno stirnh ground vtltli half moons of black. The skirt wns close to below the knees, then flaring, nnd Hn underskirt of white chif fon showed. The bodice wns a blouse drnwn Into n white sntln belt. A deep yoke of white chiffon extended to the belt In n point. Hot under the edge of the blouse and showing between It and the yoke was a deep banding of brilliant scar let. It Is a fail lately to wear n waistcoat of shirred silk or chiffon In brilliant color that shows not only where the Jncket or blouse opens in .front, but also above It and against the yoke. A collar of lncc with scrolling of the pnnne surah and tracings of scarlet lay over the shoulders of this bodice. Hlack velvet bows and (drops held together the edges of the blouse. The general effect of the gown wns simple, the colors made It suitable for almost any occasion, while the dash of brilliant scarlet and the touch of black BUMMKIl COl'YINO. mnde It distinguished. The pnnne surah the artist sketched appears at the left In the last picture. It was white figured with scarlet. On the bodice were u vest of white India Inwn, nnd revers of tbo lawn embroidered In black nnd edged with unrrow black lawn beading, Cotton weaves so finished as to present a silken luster are being pushed mightily, and It is claimed that they will wash without losing the luster. Holies ready for making up come In these materials. They are generously elaborated with tuck ing, Insertions and flounces of Inee and are very dainty. They nro so far from expensive that even If they do uot look "Just like It" nfter the tub, they should wear long enough to pay for themselves before they need washing. One of these cottons In com color wns the foundation of the third gown of these four, a triple skirt of all-over embroidered linen com ing over it. With this went a bolero of MOHB KLAIIOKATU. black taffeta and a corn colored lawn from. . Taffeta It returning to general favor both at a dress goods aud as a material to combine with other stuff. Itecause of the fakhlonableiiess of black and white combinations, a deal of It it black. The last dress in this group was, black taffeta, npplliiucd elaborately with pink flowers nnd green lenes. Yoke and collar were green llk ktenelled to show white K ueath aud outlined with costal embroid ery. Sash aud rosettes were white kilk mull. This should prove that black taf feta is in good company, It more ei den co it needed, eoustder the combina tions mnde between taffeta aud Ittwu or muslins. Copyright IPOq. The boy In search of a Job turned up at supper tlmo nt his sister's house, looking rather disconsolate. "I didn't get nothing to do," he said shortly. . "I don't wonder If you used thai kind of grammar," said his sister. "That wasn't It; I had my company grammar on all right; 'twas something lelso and I'll tell Jim about It "after supper. You'd spring the 'I told you bo' gamo on me, and mako mo tired." Jim was tho brother-in-law, and bad been a Job-hunting boy himself not many years before. Ho was beckoned Into the sitting-room Immediately after rising from tho table, and once there tho door was shut by his wife's youth ful brother, who turned and said: "I went to fourteen places to-day; Jim, and wns turned down nt every shot. I've read about such things In tho Sunday school books nnd In the funny papers, ' but 1 thought It was all gab. Tho guys I applied to didn't nsk me If I lived with my mother; they didn't nsk trie If I wroto a good hand; they didn't ask If I knew tho city, aud they didn't ask , nothing nt nil that I expected them Ip ask me. The first thing four of them says was, 'Hold up your mitts," while tho others say, 'Plenso let us look at your hands.' There wns ono looktand four of them says 'Git' and the rest says, polltc-llkc, 'We don't think we re quire your services. "What wns the matter?" asked the sister's husband. Tho boy held up. tbo forefinger of his left hand, nloLg tho luner side of which a yellow stain showed as far as the second knuckle. "That," he said, simply. "H'm," snld tho brotheMndaw, "the boss In our shop won't allow cigarette smoking cither, but I didn't know things hnd gone ns far ns this. -Why don't you quit?" "I have, I quit Inst night. ( Tho chief nnd acknowledged prope of our (tingllsli) "Intelligence" are the military attaches to our various minis tries abroad, snys MnJ. Arthur Griffith, In tho Cornhlll. Theoretically they lmvo uo means of neiiulrlng knowledge other than tho official; practically they are, of course, aided by their powers of observation, tho trained professional skill which can uote at a glanco things most worth knowing, such us tbo hand ling of artillery, tho speed and weight of n cavalry charge, tho probable value of some now "order of attack." Tho attache, to bo really useful, must also bo n persona grata to tho foreign officers of tho country In which he Is serving, and ho often learns much from tho cnmnraderlo of the cloth and the free discussion of measures nnd meth ods. All this work Is open and above board. Wo may not luqulro too closely whether or not Intelligence Is gained by other menus, but It Is pretty ccrtala that there nro plenty of secret agents In every capital eager to soil It at a price, nnd often very pertinacious la their offers of some particularly val uable, bit of news. Tho game Is seldom worth tho candle, and It Is exceedingly dangerous. Not ninny years back an nttncho of the Kngllsh embassy to u grenf power Is snld to have narrowly escaped arrest through lutrlguo with ono of theso ub nvnwonblo persons. Possibly tho for eign government would not have pro ceeded to extremities with ono of the corps dlplomnttquo, but tho pressure must have been very sovere, for the story rnu that tho attache found a pass port waiting for him nt his chancery, uud wns hurried across tho frontier la rather undignified baste. The ruator snld that military attaches of other na tionalities were Involved In tho scrape, nnd also had to fleo tho country. Haro-tatlo lllaninrok. Men who flud It hard to acquire rer elgu languages may tuko a llttlo coat fort lu the following lilsuinrck story: Prluco lllsuuirck wns pressed by a certain American official to recommend his son for u diplomatic place.
