AMASSED $00,000,000 AND LIVED TO HIS 00 TH YEAR. lie Was the Owner of More Itnllronds limn Any Other Mini and Was AIbo the HiKiti-st Lund Owner in the United BtUtCH. Olio of the richest of Americans, John Inslee Ulnlr, died at bis homo lu Hlulrs town, N. J., from old age, being In his ninety-eighth year. For a very rich man ho was comparatively unknown and his entire life was passed on and near the Delaware lllver, where It di vides Northern New Jersey from Penn sylvania, which tended all the moro to his obscurity. Hut his departure opens up to view a rare and splendid charac ter who made tlio-most of his opportuni ties and tho possibilities for rapid en richment only to be found In our own country. Mr. Hlnlr en me of Scotch blood, his nncestors settling In New Jersey in 1720. They were Presbyterians of the most orthodox type. The subject of this sketch was born Aug. 22, 1S02, nt Ilelvldore, N. J. He was one of eleven c lldreu, eight sons and three daugh ters. Tho llrst money he earned was by trapping rabbit and muskrats and selling their skins at SI for sixteen. He- fore he was 11 years old he was a clerk In tho general store of his brother, at Hope, N. J. At 17 he owned' a store of his own. Ho became postmaster at Putts' Bridge. Ho started two of his brothers lu business mid they, too, prospered. At one time he had tlve gen eral stores In as many towns. He es tablished the Belvldere Bank lu 1831. A cotton mill fell Into his hnnds nnd he operated It for several years. He bought n cargo of cotton which woh supposed to be damaged, but which was Injured very little, and In one year made $115, 000 an enormous prollt In those days. JOHN I. III. A in. Ho hnd also four (louring mills In oper ation nt ouo time lu Warren County. He accumulated real estate In large quantities through trade, mid came to lx) a wholcsnlo merchant. Soon he was well on to being n millionaire. Then ho tried to mnku Iron with anthracite coal nt Slociim Hollow, now Scranton, Pa., lu 18-13, and became Interested lu tho Scrnntou Coal nnd Iron Company. It was through his llunnclnl backing that this company was enabled to sup ply the Erie Hallway, then building near Port Jervls, with rails. The com pany was reorganized, with Mr. Blair as principal owner. It obtained a char ter for a railroad from Scranton to Great Bend, called Leggett's Uallroad, and which was to connect with thcKrle. This was the real beginning of the Del aware, Lackawanna and Western sys tem. For some years the company had to send out men to teach people to use anthracite coal. Many declared that It would not burn. In nil the successive stoges of the building of tho Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, Mr. Blair Avns the master spirit, and his mercan tile genius caused him to prollt Im mensely by the development of Scran ton. Mr. Blair caused tho llrst miction sale of coal to be made lu Now York, Just prior to the war. By this means ho kept tho price of coal up and at the same time defeated the cry of monopo ly. Before tho war there was little or no demand for Iron, but his company kept right on manufacturing It. Sud denly Iron rose to S50, $S0 and then $100 a ton. A Railroad Ilullder. Mr. Blair next built n railroad In Iowa, then Joined Oakes Ames In or ganizing the Union Pacific nnd con structed Its first hundred miles west from Omaha. Ho built railroads by tho dozen In the West. The great un dertakings of which he was tho master have never been duplicated by any oth er American. Jay Gould nt times hnd to accept his terms. He held the mort gage bonds of scores of railroad com panies, some of which were absolutely In his power. Ho washed his hands of the Chicago and Northwestern Itoad to the extent of $2,000,000 worth of stock, because he did not approve of the ex tension policy of the company. The money which he received for this stock he brought Kast In two satchels nnd de posited personally In the Park Bauk In Now York City. In the building of all his Western roads Mr. Blair obtained enormous land grauts ns premiums. In connection with his work on the Union "aclflc he got 1.000,000 acres of land In Iowa. For completing the Iowa Falls and Sioux City Boad he obtained 700. 000 acres. With all this land on his hands Mr. Blair formed land companies, and these companies, under his direc tion, laid out the sites for what nre now more than 100 flourishing cities and towns In the West. At one time he was tho largest land owner In tho Uni ted States. It was In 1800 that he un dertook railroad building in the West. In that year he was sent as a delegate to Uw Chicago convention which nom lMssssV LivY4 inated Abraham Lincoln for the Presi dency. A few years ago Mr. Blnlr, with con siderable pride, made the statement that he had built every road with which he had ever been connected for cash nnd without putting a dollar's worth of its stock on the market to raise money. lie calculated that In his rail road operations he had spent $20,000, 000, nil of which ho either ndvanced himself or raised among his friends. The fortune left by Mr. Blair Is not less than $60,000,000 and may reach S70, 000,000. His home In Blalrstown, which he founded, was a simple one for one with such vnst possessions. As his millions came to him he never thought of leav ing his two-story frame house, with Its green shutters nnd tho cupola In the center of the Hat roof. That was suill dent. So he lived to the end of his life, simple nnd homely, hating ostentation and loving nnd being loved In return by everyone who dwelt In his town. An enthusiastic Itepubllcnn, in 1808, his pnrty made him candidate for Gov ernor, but ho was beaten at the polls. Tho campaign cost him $00,000. WEAPONS OF ANIMALS. CIuwh, Teeth, Horns nnd Hoofs All Come lliuuly at TIiiich. Many nnlnmls, Including both those that kill nnd those that aro killed, nro endowed with special mentis of olVcnslvo and defensive combat. The latter are often furnished with weapons of effec tive value, such as the horns of cattle mid goats aud tho hoofs of horses, says the Philadelphia Times. 13 ven some of tho largest nulmnls, which nro uot cnrulvoioiiH nnd inny bo said to have no enemies, possess special organs that they cau use for Inflicting wounds. Such nro tho tusks of the elephant, the horn of tho rhinoceros nnd tho antlers of the moose. Their primary purposo, however, Is to aid In procuring food and In cleaving n way through forest and Jungle. With beauts and birds of prey wenp ons of attack are Indispensable. Among the most highly developed aro the retractile claws ot the cut family, thccuttlng and tearing teeth of the wolf family mid tho talons of eagles nnd hawks. Kven In lower forms of life wo And highly specialized weapons, chef among which me the fangs of venom ous serpents mid the htlugs of been, wasps mid hornets, rendered far moro effective by the presence of a powerful mid sometimes deadly poison. While noting the lllio.nl endowment of creatines .that prey up. u niilmnlj, we must not lose sight of the fact that certain vegetarians are nlso well equip ped with weapons of coml.nt. The males of tho bovine and the goat tribes lu tho wild state use these weapoiH largely lu their combats with rlvu s of their own species, whlL the females employ them chiefly lu defense of their young. The bull fights with tho head down, often with the eyes closed; mid tho horns, being usually short nnd nearly strnlght, can be used only one at a time, nlded by tho toss of the powerful neck. Tho horns of tho cow lu nil tho com moner bieds nre turned somewhat for ward so us to be of the utmost service, nnd the faithful mother lights for her calf against dog or wild beast with her head raised and eyes wide open. A stag brought to bay sometimes presents his antlers to tho hunter. With some species these branching horns nro shed nt certain sensons, nnd during their renewed growth are for a time soft nnd useless as weapons. They gain strength nnd toughnrss nt the season When rivalry and battles between tho males ore lu ordor, nnd It Is, therefore, natural to Infer that the autleru nro Intended chiefly for this purposo. Against many foes however, mnn In cluded, tho deer family find their best weapons lu their hoofs, with which they stiiko and cut ns with knives, sometimes killing dogs, wounding hunt ers and at other times cutting colled rattlesnakes Into pieces. An Anolcnt Coin, Ouo of the prized curios of the Phil adelphia mint Is a coin which Is 2,000 years old, and which was coined nt tho ancient mint of that other Philadelphia of tho far east mentioned in tho Bible. It Is still In good condition, and tho In scription Is perfectly legible. Tho de sign on tho face of tho coin bears n striking resemblance to tho Goddess of Liberty of our own currency, and un derneath Is tho one word. "Demos," which means "tho people." On tho other side Is tho figure of Diana, with her bow arched, and the Inscription, "Diana, Friend of tho Phlladelphlans." When this coin was struck otf Philadel phia was the most Important city of Lydla. Sculpture Should Fauo Houth. A group of sculpture should never front to tho north, from which point It Is always viewed under unfavorable conditions, as the strong southern light Is trying to tho eyes and the features of tho figures nre In such deep shadows thnt they enn hardly bo seen certnlnly not to advantage. Facing the south tho conditions nro nil reversed. Such mis takes, It may bo added, are rarely mnde by artists, but sometimes by the direct ing authorities. A case In point Is tho statute of Peun, surmounting tho City Hall In Philadelphia, which Is far too high and faces the wrong way. Slates and SliortlKlite(liio. It Is the opinion of a German oculist that the use of ordinary slates by school children tends to produce short-sightedness.
