Pair Mnrpory I chanced to view Within her pinion's cny-decked space, Glnd In a gown of puriilc Inn', A sylph with nil n Mower's Brncc. 1'ou loft upon my heart so true An Iniace time can ne'er erase Maid In violet! K love-llpht In her eyes, whose blue Of heaven's azure seemed a trace; Whnt wonder I begnu to woo! One obstacle they nerds must face; The other lovers who would Bite A promise without days of grace, Made Inviolate. Woman's Home Companion. HER BIGGEST PUPIL. Scene: Tlie little parlor in the modest cottage lu which Miss Mary Brewster boards. Mr. Jltu Thrasher nervously nwnlt Ing her, his stalwart form perched on Uie edge of an easy chair. As she enters his eye brightens, ho Millies, nnil dropping his broad brim med hat on the tloor ho rises. Mary You wished to see mo? Jim Yes, Miss Mary. (He eagerly puts out his baud. She takes it in a hesitating manner.) You don't know me. I was nfinld you wouldn't. Fif teen years, and a beard, and any mini ler of hard knocks do change a man. But you why, you've scarcely altered a particle. Can't you guess who It Is? Mary You remind me something In your voice In your smile reminds me f of a boy I once knew. Jim, delightedly I'm the boy. Mary Not uot Jim Thrasher? Jim The very Identical. Mnry I'm so glad to see you. (She tnkes his hand Impulsively.) Sit down, please. It Is so kind of you to limit ino up. I've thought about you many times and tried to wonder what you were doing and what you had become. Jim That's very good of you, Miss Mnry. I hnrdly supposed you'd cher ish such pleasant remembrances for your biggest pupil. What n gawk I ivasl I can't liuaglno how you had any patience with me. Let me see. I was Just 20 that last winter lu the old red school house and n head taller than you nnd two years older, wasn't .1? Vhnt mi awkward problem I must Imvo been for you! Too old to leani and too big to whip. Mnry Ah, but you never needed whipping. You were my right hand man, my prop, my encouragement. I don't know whnt I would have done with those big boys from down the creek if it hndu't been for your strong muscles. Jim Do you remember how you talk ed to mo the tlrst day I enmu to school? 1 hud come with those very creek boys to make trouble. My mother died whon I was very young, and no other woman had ever talked kindly to inc. When you appealed to my honor, and putting your hand on my shoulder begged mo not to bury the good that was lu me, something seemed to swell lu my breast, and from that moment I re solved to be n man a man whom you would one day be proud to bay you leuew. Mnry You mnko mo very hnppy. It is u wonderful pleasure to feel that my poor efforts were not nil wasted. It makes life worth living. Jim Life, then, hasn't nhvays but tell mo something about yourself. Mary There is very J'ftlu to tell. My mother died the summer after you went West, and I had to return home and keep houso for father. In a year or two his health failed, and after a long, long sickness he died. My brother and I were alone, uud after he found a sit uation on the rallrond we moved here. When Jho war broko out brother en listed, and died at Tampa of a fever. Jim, after a pause Ami bo you have no ties to keep you here? Jnry None. 1 Jim Anil inay I nsl; Mnry How I Biipport myself? I have Ave little pupils whom I am teaching the rudiments, nnd I do some tine sew ing. 1 get along very well only there Is always the fear of sickness. Now tell me about yourself. Jim Oue moment. I wnnt to say to you, Miss Mary, that I've been trying to tlnd you out for a long time. I wrote to the old neighborhood, asking for you, but they answered thnt nobody knew whero you had gone. I wouldn't liuve traced you down here if it hndu't been for Joe Slater. You remember little red-headed Joe, the scamp of the school? Well, he enme out to Montana, looking for walk, and I gave him a job, nnd, one day, In recalling old times, he said ho was mire ho miw you lu this toya. That's how I came to be here. About myself? Well, whntever I am, It Is you that gnvo mo the start. I fancy I'vo done pretty well. I'm something of a initio owuer and something of a capitalist, nml I'vo served n term in Congress and could have gone back. I'vo got a nice house In Helena, and there's enough Idle cash lying around to enable me to travel as much and as far us I please. You understand I'm not blowing my trumpet for the per Bonal gratillcutlou there Is lu It and yet It is a personal gratification to blow it beforo you. I'm accounting, ns it were, for the use I've made of those taleuts you called 'my attention to fif teen years ago. Mnry I'm very glad to hear of your success. I kuew you had It lu you. You hnve made the day very bright for me. Jim I nm not yet quite sure whether It, will be u bright dny for mo or not. The fact is, I I waut to ask you a favor, Miss Mary. Mnry A favor, Jim? Jim Yes, n grent favor. I I want to be your biggest pupil again! Mary I I don't understand. Jim Andlwanttobeyour only pupil. I need your help. They're talklug of making me governor uext fall, nnd I'll require lots of polishing up. Ob, It will bo hard work, but you'll find mo a willing pupil. I Mnry 1 don't know whnt you mean. Jim (rising nnd coming closer) I'll oxplalu. They say, you know, that n well-ordered boy usually falls lu lovo with his teacher. That's his very tlrst love. And most well ordered boys get over It. But this boy Is different. Ho doesn't get over It. That tencher has been to him the one Ideal of sweet est womanhood through all his llftocn yenrs of hard knocks nnd growing success. Do you understand now? Teacher, guide, friend, will you be that grateful boy's wife? Mary (covering her face with her hands) Oh, Jim, Jim, I'm so old! Jim (taking her hands) Nonsense! And you are growing younger every minute. Besides, don't forgot for n I moment thnt I am two years your senior! Come, Mary; I need you. ' There Is a homo wnltlng for you In the West, and comfort, and love. I dou't ask you to love me yet. Perhaps 1 can teach you that. There, there; don't cry. Surely there's nothlug you leave behind worth these tears. j .Mary (rising) Tiiey nrc tears or imp plni's.s. Jim. Her head dropq on his shouldcr. Clovclnnd Plain Dealer. A suave old gentleman sitting opposite to her presently bent forwnrd and said, with gentle reproof: "Excuse me. but do you think It wise, when there are so many thieves about, to carry your purse so conspicuously?" As he spoke, he pointed to her purse, which was projecting slightly from her pocket. Miss II., considering the stranger rather otllclous, thrust the portemounalo down Into her pocket nnd thanked him with n stiff reserve, perhaps n trlfie scornfully. At the next station the old gentleman got out. As he did so, he turned to his pretty vls-n-vis with a polite bow nnd the mischiev ous Indulgence of his years. "Allow me to restore your purse. You see, It was not so hard to lose as you supposed!" So saying, he held out to her the purse she had supposed was safely re posing In her pocket. Miss II. received It. coloring with chlldllko niortlllcntlon, thanked him profusely, nnd her old friend took his lenvo with a friendly smile. A few minutes later, when the otMclnl came round to collect tickets, Miss II. discovered her purse to be empty. A Now Feature In VToiilorn TrnvcllnR.
