Tlio story Ih so well known, the hook havitu had such great publicity, achieving wonderful success, that tho plot of tho play Is familial' to nearly everybody. During the process of adapting tho story for stage purposes, nothing has been lost of the principal parts and the narrative is more power ful and dramatic than in book form. It has been said that "The Silence of Dean Maitlaud" resembles, in general outline, Hawthorne's "Scarlet Letter," but that there is a vast difference be tween the two for the reason that the "Scarlet Letter" was a failure on tho stage, whereas "The Silence of Dean Maitland" has proven a success, It be ing what is designated as an "acting play" in tho truo interpretation of tho phrase. Tho exalted standing and reputation of Hlack l'atti, tho extraordinary excel lence of her Troubadours, and tho phenomenal success of their perform ances elsewhere, makes the appearance of this remarkable company of singers, dancers and comedians to this city an event of immense publlo Interest. Hlack Pntti's lyric triumphs in all tho leading music cities of I'umpo and America are without parallel. Sho is one of the most popular prima donnas in tho world, and has probably sung before the largest and most distin guished audiences that over assembled to applaud a cautatrice. TIPPING RAILROAD PORTERS. A Trutcler'M AiKiiiiieiil In favor of Dm I'lucllce. To the Fdltor of The Age: For a great number of years I have traveled iu Pullman cars and dining my trips I was a most careful observer. Ofteu many questions would arise iu my mind, the foremost being should tho passengers tip porters employed on these carsV Well, in order to answer this nll-iiii'Mirtaut question, I noticed llrst what the jsirter did. After seeing tho earnestness, patience and straight forward iiiauiior of the Kirter, I came to the conclusion that I for one would never leave a Pullman car without lay ing a reasonable tip iu the porter's hand. Consider what a help the suter is, and how in obvious ways ho assists our wives, mothers and daughters. Suppose your wife, with a number of children, wished to take a trip and your business did not permit .ou to accom pany them, or your income was iuelli clout to obtain a nurse. In this pre dicament what would you do? Von would either Have to let her go unac companied or deprive hoi of going, tho former being hard to do and the later, iu woman's estimation, simply heart rending. Well, ". on permit her to go. She has to make odd connect ions fur trains, lend an eai to the many wants of the childieii, see thai they aie all comfortable, carrying some of the chil dren iu her arms and all the many boxes and parcels that women find it necessary to carry, and do a hundred and one things which tho husband or nurse should be doing. She cannot get along alone or iu your abs nee, what is she to do? Dining the lonely hours of the night a liltle one starts with pain and the poor mother is al most distracted, She cannot appeal to the husband or uiiise, so having no other help nigh, she calls for aid from the tiortor, who williulgy assists her as much as possible, and iu some cases is of more use than the husband would be. Sometimes children tram I unaccom panied. In this ease they are placed in tho porter's care, 'llie jtiter is given a liberal Up and careful instruc tions, all of which are carefully carried out and tho patents feel that all is well. Not because tiny hae any idea that the porter is com pel led to do so, or that ho has any special jntetest in the child, but for the tip's sake. See ing that the porter is hi kind hcaitcd and obliging and dies in jour nlutiicu what you want done and mote than you could do were you pistuit, and ly carefully consideiing the aid icceived from the porter, you will emphatically agree with mo that tl.oioitcr M ouhl bo tipped. Uttl'ilWilt.
