Buddy Bowl raises $25,000
The Next Door’s annu-
al Buddy Bowl fundraiser
to benefit its Gorge Youth
Mentoring (GYM) program
had another successful year,
raising over $25,000.
The event, held at Orchard
Lanes Bowling Center on
March 7, brought together 20
enthusiastic teams of varying
skill levels for a day of bowl-
ing, prizes and wacky team
photos.
“Fun and fundraising ruled
the day, with the Rowdy
Rollers team donning prom
dresses, their high school
letterman’s jackets, and
pom poms. The team Board
(Not Bored), comprised of a
handful of The Next Door’s
board of directors, earned
top fundraiser honors, with
nearly $1500 raised,” said a
press release.
GYM, formerly Big
Brothers Big Sisters of the
Columbia Gorge, has been a
program of The Next Door for
nearly 20 years. The program
matches children, teens, and
young adults ages 6-21 with
volunteer adult mentors.
Matches, paired based on
common interests and com-
patible personalities, spend
time together doing activi-
ties of their own choosing a
couple times a month.
If you’re age 21 or older
and would enjoy being a
friend to a youth who needs
a consistent and positive
role model, apply to be a
mentor. Visit nextdoorinc.

Pedestrians skirt cones surrounding road excavation on Baseline in Parkdale across from Lady
Fern and Solera Brewery Wednesday. Parkdale Sanitary District issued a boil water order at 9 a.m.
Wednesday, pending repairs, after a main line was exposed and a valve replaced. District officials said
laboratory test results came back clean on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and gave the okay to affected cus-
tomers to use water as normal. (Under the order, water needed to be boiled when used for consump-
tion or kitchen use and hygiene but not for bathing or clothes washing.) The order affected customers
north of Baseline only.

Hood River County Community ID updates
“Many of you have heard
of the Hood River County
(HRC) Community ID. One
of the goals of the ID is to
promote a sense of belonging
for all who live in our com-
munity,” begins a Next Door
Inc. press release. “In this dif-
ficult time of social distanc-
ing and sheltering in place
it is normal to feel isolated
and alone. We can support
each other by reaching out
by phone, email and letters.
Many groups are meeting by
phone or computer. Do what
you can to help yourself and
others by reaching out so
we all are reminded that we
belong to each other.”
The Next Door has post-
poned all of of its Community
ID enrollment events for
now. And the Community
ID team wants to remind
everyone about the medical
services that you have access
to with your Community ID:
■ All Providence clinics
■ Columbia Gorge Family
Medicine
■ One Community Health
■ Wilson Street Medical
Clinic
“These incredible part-
ners are serving our com-
munity and supporting the
Community ID program,”
said the press release. “ If
you are feeling sick, don’t be
afraid to access healthcare.
But please call first. Do not go
to their office without sched-
uling an appointment.”
Another supporter of
the Community ID is FISH
food bank. They will accept
Community ID and can safe-
ly provide food.

Informes sobre la iden-
tificación comunitaria del
Condado de Hood River
Muchos ya han escuchado
de la identificación comuni-
taria del Condado de Hood
River. En inglés se conoce
como Hood River County
Community ID. Una de las
metas del ID es promover un
sentido de pertenecer para
todos los que vivimos en el
condado. En este tiempo
difícil de distanciamiento
social y mantenernos en casa
es normal sentirnos aislados
y solos. Nos podemos apoyar
unos a los otros por llamar
a seres queridos, o enviarles
text o correo electrónico.
Haga lo que pueda para
ayudarse a sí mismo y a los
demás al comunicarse con
otros. Así nos recordará que
todos pertenecemos unos a
los otros.
El Next Door ha sospedni-
do todas las inscripciones de
la identificación comunitaria
por ahora. El equipo de la
identificación del Next Door

As many of you know,
Wasco County has now
experienced its first case of
the coronavirus. An elderly
gentleman at the Oregon
Veterans Home was diag-
nosed yesterday. While this
was inevitable, there is some-
thing about this first case that
serves as a combination gut
punch and wake up call.
Our thoughts and prayers
go out to this veteran who has
served our country in hopes
of a full recovery.
Recent reports and studies
have analyzed the effective-
ness of social distancing
both in the USA and in other
countries.
While The Dalles, Wasco
County, Oregon and the
United States are all in the
early stages of this epidemic,

there are promising results
from these studies that in-
dicate that social distancing
is working and the earlier
areas instituted this practice,
the slower the spread of the
disease.
I believe that over the
coming weeks, as more and
more people stay at home
and keep their distances, we
will see better results and
the pressure on our precious
health care workers, first re-
sponders and retail employ-
ees will get better.
