On Stage
Early March was a busy time in local theater as three local produc-
tions full of Gorge youths prepared for performances. However,
with school closures and community cancellations due to coro-
navirus concerns, all three productions did not come close to
finishing their scheduled runs (as well as the adult “West Side
Story” from CGOA at Wy’east Performing Arts Center). With
these photos, we look back on the spring season-that-didn’t-
happen, in recognition of the time and effort put into the pro-
ductions by cast and crew. At right, Hanna Clute (Wilbur the Pig)
and friends in a scene from “Charlotte’s Web” at Columbia Center
for the Arts, which lasted one performance. Below, the cast of
“Seussical: The Musical” at Horizon Christian School, Ella Harty
and Sophie Thornburg guide the goslings on stage in “Charlotte’s
Web,” and Bridgette Johnston as Sebastian the lobster, left,
and Abriela Lopez as Flounder, lead the rest of the “The Little
Mermaid” cast in “Under the Sea,” at Hood River Middle School.

‘The Special News’
Ryen Heck, 12 years old and a seventh-grader at Hood River Middle School, took advantage of the
March 14 “blank front page” to create her own edition of the Hood River News. Wrote her mother,
Kristi Heck, “Thanks for the quarantine activity.” Our thanks to Ryen for her creativity, humor, and
helpful information — much of it good for folks of any age. (The blank pages were a four-page wrap
around the actual edition; inside were information on News and Chronicle staff members as well as
benefits of supporting community newspapers, and information on the recent Kids Classified compe-
tition, won by Ben Tama, first; Pavlik Zavadsky, second; Rohan Faber, third; Wyatt Burkhardt, runner
up, and Hailey Harjo, runner-up.)
