Disaster prep talk July 21
Earthquakes have been
and will occur in Ore-
gon. Are you concerned
about being prepared if one
should hit Hood River?
Do you need some advice
on dealing with the heat
wave lately? Do you know
about all Red Cross’s helpful
apps? Come learn how to be
prepared for any natural
disaster at the Disaster Pre-
paredness Presentation.
You will learn about how to
be prepared for an earth-
quake, flood, fire, and other
natural disasters, so that
you will never be caught un-
prepared or uninformed
about what to do next.
This Disaster Prepared-
ness Presentation is pre-
sented by Andrea Smith an
Oregon State Service Corps
(OSSC) AmeriCorps volun-
teer at the History Museum
of Hood River County. The
OSSC is sponsored by the
American Red Cross who
created the Disaster Pre-
paredness Presentation.
The presentation will be
hosted by the Hood River
County Library and take
place at 1 p.m. on July 21.
The presentation will last
about 30 minutes and light
snacks will be provided.
United Way of the Gorge
awards grant recipients
Non-profits to be
recognized July 23
This year the United Way of
the Columbia Gorge (UWCG)
will allocate funding to 35 local
non-profit programs. A team
of 60-plus Gorge volunteers
raised $205,000 which will now
be channeled directly to a di-
verse group of human service
agencies serving Hood River,
Klickitat, Sherman, Skamania
and Wasco counties.
Many local non-profit agen-
cies need financial support be-
yond their own annual
fundraising efforts. Organiza-
tions such as SMART, FISH
Food Bank, Helping Hands
Against Violence and CASA,
rely on these extra funds from
the United Way, which often
times mean the difference be-
tween being able to provide,
rather than deny, children and
adults the services they des-
perately need.
“Our local United Way is ex-
traordinary in that it is fueled
by local volunteers helping
local people,” said Jeff Heater,
UWCG Board Member. “Our
process is really about uniting
people and funds to make a
real impact in our communi-
ty.”
Each non-profit agency that
applied for funding was thor-
oughly screened, interviewed
and selected by a volunteer
committee of Columbia Gorge
residents representing the five
counties. The 35 selected pro-
grams will be honored at the
annual United Way Agency
Social on July 23 at the Best
Western PLUS Hood River
Inn. A list of 2015 funded agen-
cies is included below.
For information on becom-
ing a volunteer, or donating to
the United Way of the Colum-
bia Gorge, contact the local of-
fice at (541) 386-6100 or PO Box
2, Hood River, OR; or visit
their website at www.united-
waycolumbiagorge.org. A
Community “Wish List” for
volunteer and in-kind dona-
tion needs within United Way
funded agencies can also be ac-
cessed on the website.

S INGING AND S IGNING
Earth Camp kids sign and sign to a song about the trees and the shelter and aid they give to humans and animals, at Riverside
Community Church. Sue Hukari taught the children American Sign Language to go with the song as Pam Reidl accompanied on
ukulele in the church’s Pioneer room. About 40 children attended the week-long ecumenical camp, which emphasizes sustain-
ability along with spirituality, and plenty of games and crafts involving scripture as well as the natural world. Pam’s husband, Hel-
mut, an entomologist, gave a demonstration involving preserved as well as live insects. The youngsters also toured the Hood
River News/Columbia Gorge Press next door. Churches throughout the county are welcoming children and families to summer
programs and vacation Bible schools.
