YOUNGSTERS ENJOY a varia-
tion on the circle game “Duck,
Goose” at Immanuel Lutheran
Church in Hood River, which
held the summer’s first Vaca-
tion Bible School this week.
Olivia Sommerset tags a friend
with her new animal name. In
one of several “momentum
games,” each child chose his or
her own animal, from cats to
“dangerous lizards” and then
broke up the circle to run
around the yard imitating their
animal. At right, Jynel Heredia,
8, adds food to the donation
barrel as campers donated
food throughout the week for
FISH food bank.

Education Foundation issues
community-based scholarships
The Hood River County Ed-
ucation Foundation (HRCEF)
awarded 55 scholarships this
year to help Hood River Val-
ley High School graduates
with college expenses. Forty-
five of the scholarships are
funded by individuals and
families, or local organiza-
tions, via donations to
HRCEF, and 10 of the awards
came from the Foundation’s
general fundraising. Many of
the scholarships are in mem-
ory of special persons.
HRCEF scholarships range
in value from $500 to $2,500.
“This year’s applicants were
well qualified, as usual,” said
HRCEF Board vice president
Mike Schend. “It is always so
hard to choose from all of the
deserving students that apply.
We saw more students headed
for community college than in
the past, probably an indica-
tion of steadily rising tuition
in higher education.”
“I always wish that we had
more money to give. We have a
lot of qualified and needy stu-
dents who could use the help,
but our money only goes so
far,” lamented another HRCEF
Board member.
Businesses that support
scholarships include Duck-
wall-Pooley, Hood River Police,
Tofurky, Parkdale Growers’ As-
sociation and Mike’s Ice
Cream. Local organizations in-
clude the Cascade Locks Alum-
ni Association, Parkdale PTO,
and Parkdale VFW.
Scholarships winners were
announced at the HRV scholar-
ship recognition night.
HRCEF is currently seeking
applicants for three scholar-
ship funds that support Hood
River County students who are
sophomores, juniors or seniors
in college. The deadline to
apply has been extended to
July 31, 2015.
The Daum scholarships sup-
port students majoring in nurs-
ing, music or science. The
Martha and John Weber schol-
arship is for students in com-
munity college or trade school.
Details and application forms
are on the HRCEF website at
www.hrcef.org.
Anyone wishing to support a
college scholarship may donate
at www.hrcef.org. Even small
donations can be dedicated to a
special person and the honored
person’s name will appear on
the HRCEF website.
