Students might be gone from the halls for a few months, but im-
ages of community and nature are permanently in place. Artists
Shelley Toon Lindberg and Allison Fox worked this spring with stu-
dents at Mid Valley Elementary (above) and Parkdale Elementary to
create large murals involving painting and tile mosaic. The Parkdale
mural is in the north entryway next to the library, and uses words
and images to depict the lifecycle of the salmon, with fish maturing
from eggs, to alevin, fry, parr, smolt, adult, and spawning adult (the
last panel worn somewhat by young hands coming off the stairway
railing). The nature-based Mid Valley mural, done by afternoon
Excel students, wraps over and around doorways and connects to
a 10-year-old mosaic tucked to the left of the entry. Both projects
were sponsored by Arts in Education of the Gorge.
