www.hoodrivernews.com A9 Hood River News, Saturday, May 23, 2015 Marbach, Cook partner with Columbia Gorge Press on new Gorge Scenic Area book The Columbia Gorge Press has ventured in to the book publishing arena with a stunning new photo essay project with Peter Marbach and Janet Cook. “Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area” re- unites acclaimed Hood River photographer Peter Marbach with The Gorge magazine editor Janet Cook for their fourth book project together. “We are grateful to Peter for the opportunity to show the high end produc- tion values of the Colum- bia Gorge Press,” said Tony Methvin, General Manager. Peter and Janet collabo- rated in 2011 on a special commemorative book on the 25th anniversary of the legislation that created the national scenic area. The book sold out in its first year and when the previous publisher went out of business, Peter began a search for a new publisher. “It is wonderful to be working on a product that is truly 100 percent Made in the Gorge,” said Mar- bach. “Partnering with the Columbia Gorge Press has been a blessing and Janet D ENNY Continued from Page A1 and in the district, and I’ve done work on the committee scale with the Department of Oregon.” He’s served as the post’s commander “nine or 10 times,” as vice commander “seven, eight or nine times,” on the board of directors, as the chaplain — both post and district — and was even the district vice commander “a couple of times,” with a ser- vice area that goes from Cas- cade Locks to La Pine. Not a bad record for 36 years. “They was pushing me hard, trust me,” he said. Leonard has helped plan the annual Idlewilde Ceme- tery Memorial Day service for nearly as many years as he’s been with the American Legion. “One goes into the other after a while,” he said. USPS crash effects delivery and I are thrilled to keep the legacy going of our work to celebrate and honor the gifts of the Gorge.” (The book was original- ly slated for release in April.) A serious traffic acci- dent occurred in Port- land late Wednesday night involving a tractor- trailer operated by a con- tractor for the U.S. Postal Service and a private ve- hicle. About 1,500 packages were inside the trailer, and the vast majority were severely damaged or destroyed. There used to be more than one veteran’s organiza- tion in the valley, and all would help with the service. “Now we’re just down to us, basically. We just inherit- ed this stuff over a period of time,” he said. On Thursday mor ning under threatening skies, Leonard and Idlewilde Sex- ton Bob Huskey were part of a small crew placing flags on the graves of veterans and getting the grounds ready for the weekend’s expected heavy traffic. By Sunday evening, Leonard said, the grounds will be completely ready for Monday’s 11 a.m. ceremony start. This year’s theme is “Hon- oring T hose Who Have Served,” and as such, a new, 6-foot illuminated floral wreath will be dedicated to all veterans buried in Hood River County. Other high- lights will include twenty- two veterans’ names added to the Walk of Honor, a fly- over by WAAAM pilots, Peter Marbach and Janet Cook music by the Hood River Val- ley High School band, a mu- sical tribute sung by Andy Streich, and a three cannon salute after “Taps.” It’s the support of the com- munity, year after year, that makes the ceremony happen, Leonard said, whether they’re working behind the scenes to get the cemetery ready for visitors, or in the ceremony itself. And that in- cludes his daughters, Shelley Leonard and Tammy Long. Leonard served in the Vietnam War from June 1967 to June 1968 in the Ninth In- fantry Division, Task Force 117, Mobile Riverine Force. His Army unit was the only one since the Civil War that has held continuous opera- tions with the US Navy, a fact he’s proud of. “We were in a lot of com- bat,” he said. “Our unit was about three years in the Delta before things starting going the other way. We had 2,644 KIA (kill in action) and 18,831 wounded. We were there during the Tet Offen- sive, and they came through the south and went back down through the south.” He was one of the wound- ed. He understands why some vets don’t like to talk about their war experiences. “It’s not a pleasant sub- ject,” he said. “A lot of people don’t understand the con- cept. It’s not like the movies, it’s organized chaos. Once the first bullet comes whizzing through the air, everything goes south.” For more detailed infor- mation about this year’s Memorial Day ceremony, turn to pages A10-A11. claim for any loss that may have resulted in this incident.
