ROWAN ANNE MCKENNA, who is 6-and-three-quarters, scales the climbing wall at Hood River Middle School, site — and ben-
eficiary — of the May 26 Climbing Wall Rodeo.
May 26 Climbing Wall Rodeo welcomes
beginners and experienced climbers
Gorge Grippers Climbing Team pre-
sents Climbing Wall Rodeo May 26 at
the Hood River Middle School gym, lo-
cate at 1602 May Street.
The rodeo is for beginners and ex-
perienced climbers alike. Children
ages 6-8 will climb from 4-6 p.m., and
those 9-11 from 6-8 p.m. Cost is $10 per
climber.
Prizes will be awarded; the event is
a fundraiser for the Hood River Mid-
dle School climbing wall.
Register at the event or by visiting
www.hrcommunityed.org, or call
Community Ed at 541-386-2055.
“This a fundraiser for the climbing
wall and a way to get more people in
the community familiar with it,” said
Keenan Collins, an HRVHS student
who is organizing it. Collins said there
will be two groups, beginner and expe-
rienced climber, and eight challenges:
four on the wall and four on the
ground. The wall challenges are dif-
ferent for the beginners and experi-
enced.
“On the climbing wall, kids will see
how many times they can climb up
and be lowered down in 5 minutes,
then perform challenges like climbing
up using only three points of contact
all the way up, follow certain routes
up. Experienced kids even climb blind-
folded.,” Collins said.
The ground challenges are the same
for all kids and include giant hula
hoop rotations, jumping with climb-
ing rope, crab walk challenge, and fun
activities designed to have kids use
their athletic skills in different ways.
“There will be a winner and runner
up in each age category and each par-
ticipant has the chance to win prizes
at raffle. So far there are about 30
prizes,” Collins said. Since it is climb-
ing, parents do have to resister kids
themselves either at Community Ed
or at the event.
