Jay Henson
Our community and fami-
ly have lost one of the most
beautiful smiles God ever
created. A man of quiet,
strong faith in God has gone
to be with the
Lord.
Paul Jay
Henson was
the fifth child
bor n
to
Samuel A.
and Gussie J.
Orr Henson
Jay Henson
on April 19,
1929, at Mars-
ing, Idaho. He passed away at
home in Hood River, Ore.,
with family members by his
side on May 10, 2015, at age
86.
Jay was raised in Home-
dale, Idaho. As a young adult,
he worked in Glacier Park,
Mont., as a cowboy with his
uncle Ted Orr. Together they
managed 1,000 head of cattle.
Jay never met a cow, a horse
or a member of “that race,
the Human Race,” that he
didn’t like.
In 1947 he married Betty
Melton and they had two
children, Lora Lee and Paul
Dewayne. He moved to Hood
River and worked at Dia-
mond Fruit and then for
Duckwall Pooley for 26 years
as the shipping/receiving
foreman. He was fond of say-
ing “I could drive that Hyster
from Hood River to Pocatello,
Idaho, in reverse.” After re-
tirement he enjoyed his days
as a greeter at Walmart,
sharing his smile and hugs
with customers for nine
years and one month.
He met the love of his life,
Elizabeth “Ann” Kaley Fisch-
er, on her first day of work at
the Hood River Hotel in 1970.
He wooed her with chocolate
milkshakes. His love for her
and the six children she
brought to their marriage of
31 years never waned. Jay
and Ann had one daughter,
Frankie, who claims to be an
“only child with eight sib-
lings.”
Jay was preceded in death
by both of his parents, four
siblings, a son, one grandson
and his wife Ann.
He is survived by his sis-
ter, Frankie Schierman; and
children Lora Lee Henson
Hopkins, Paul Dewayne Hen-
son, Steve Kaley (Marta),
Annie Fischer Simonds,
Candy Fischer, George Fisch-
er (Debi), Darla Fischer
Davis (Dale), Jacob Fischer
(Luciana) and Frankie Hen-
son Fleming (Scott). He is
also survived by 20 grand-
children, 26 great-grandchil-
dren and 15 great-great-
grandchildren.
Jay would want to remind
his family and friends that
“he loved you and don’t you
ever forget it!”
Services will be held at
Tucker Road Baptist Church
on May 25 at 2 p.m. Reception
following with Jay’s two fa-
vorite kinds of pie, “Hot or
Cold!”
Memorial contributions
may be given in his name to
Doernbecher Children’s Hos-
pital, The Salvation Army
and Providence Hospice of
the Gorge.
Ruth Wakamatsu
On Thursday, May 14, 2015,
the Wakamatsus lost a very
valuable member of their
family. Ruth Kikue Waka-
matsu passed away at age 97
in her home in Hood River,
Ore., with her family by her
side.
She is survived by her four
children: Judy Wols, Leland
Wakamatsu, Michael Waka-
matsu, Stephen Wakamatsu
and her two brothers, Fred
and Morris Okamura. She
spent much
of her time
with
her
adoring fami-
ly. She was
loved dearly
by her 12
grandchil-
dren,
10
great-grand-
children, and
three great-
great-grand-
children. Al-

years with
Wakamatsu Ruth, they
wished she
could have lived forever.
Ruth, or “Kik,” was born
in Hood River on Oct. 11,
1917, and grew up with her
eight siblings in the Okamu-
ra family home on Belmont
Road. She mar ried Jim
Wakamatsu on Jan. 17, 1939.
They were happily married
for 72 years before Jim
passed away on Dec. 24, 2010.
She was a super woman by
her family’s standards. For
many years she worked on
the family orchard and at the
packing house at Diamond
Fruit while raising four chil-
dren.
She was a fabulous cook
and showed her love by filling
her family’s bellies. She was
the fastest blueberry and
huckleberry picker anyone’s
ever seen and made family-fa-
mous pies. Stories and humor
were usually present when
Ruth was around. She had a
cheerful and kind spirit
which made her a pleasure to
spend time with always.
Ruth will be g reatly
missed but the memories she
created with her family will
not be forgotten and her pie
crust recipe will be passed
on from generation to gener-
ation.
The family will be holding
a graveside service which
will be planned for a later
date this summer. Many
thanks to the Hospice of the
Gorge for their loving care.

Dee Hill remains in criti-
cal condition Tuesday morn-
ing after her husband Dar-
rell Hill, a retired law en-
forcement who has demen-
tia, accidentally shot her in
the stomach Saturday morn-
ing.
Dee, 75, had surgery May
16 at Mid-Columbia Medical
Center, according to the Ore-
gon State Police.
The state police is heading
the investigation since Dar-
rell, 76, was previously The
Dalles police chief and then
the Wasco County sheriff.
The shooting did not appear
to be intentional, said Bill Fu-
gate, spokesman for the state
police. He stressed that Hill

nitive thinking.
Officers executed a search
warrant at the Hills’ resi-
dence in the 900 block of
Pomona Street and seized
the gun used in the shooting,
said Wasco County District
Attorney Eric Nisley.
He said both Darrell and
Dee Hill thought the gun he
was handling was unloaded.
Darrell cooperated with
investigators, Nisley said,
and told police he pulled the
trigger of the gun and it dis-
charged.
The shooting happened in
the living room area of the
residence, Nisley said. He
did not know how close Dee
was to Darrell when she was
shot, but said she was at “rel-
atively close range.”
According to police logs,
Dee called police just before 9
a.m. Saturday and said her
husband accidentally shot
her in the stomach with a
Glock.
Darrell is staying with a
family member, Nisley said.
“He’s secure, he’s not a
threat to anyone. He has no
access to firearms.”
Nisley said the case was
particularly difficult. “I go
from waves of grief because
I’ve known Dee and Darrell
Hill for almost 20 years, and
to see them in this circum-
stance is heartbreaking.”
He said he also has waves
of “anger, just for the situa-
tion, not at anybody in par-
ticular. Maybe it could have
been prevented.”
The Dalles Police Chief
Jay Waterbury said, “It’s a
terrible tragedy.”
“I find something like this
hard to come to a realization
about, considering this guy
was kind of my teacher
going through the years,”
Waterbury said. “I kind of
followed him: As he was pro-
moted, I was promoted. He’s
a guy I could always go to
and ask the questions I did-
n’t have answers to.”
Waterbury added, “We’re
hoping and praying for Dee
and hoping everything
comes out ok.”
