Hawks in good form heading into final regular season meet
Horizon Christian’s track and field team
has its final regular season meet Saturday in
Arlington to prepare for the May 16 Big Sky
district championships in Moro.
The Hawks were busy last week, compet-
ing Thursday in Sherwood and Friday in
Glenwood. Horizon’s athletes used the back-
to-back meets to try some new events and
fine-tune their regular ones.
Horizon’s girls team was fourth overall
(and second among Class 1A schools) at the
18-team Southwest Christian Invitational at
Sherwood High School. The Hawks were led
by senior Hannah Kempf, who had a whirl-
wind day with four events, as did freshman
Paulina Finn.
Kempf placed second — and near her per-
sonal bests — in three individual events: 200-
meter dash (28.5 seconds); 400 (64.9); and
triple jump (32 feet). She and Finn teamed
with Haley Becnel and Kloee Brown to finish
fourth in the 4x100 relay. Finn won the high
jump at 4-feet-8, was third in the triple jump
(31-2.5) and fifth in the low hurdles (55.7).
Junior Salvador Ramirez continued to
rewrite the school record book, his latest ad-
dition coming in the 800 at the Southwest
meet. Ramirez finished second in the two-lap
race in 2 minutes, 4.6 seconds, a personal

arch rival The Dalles (results
unavailable at press time)
coupled with another poten-
tial home win Friday at 4:30
p.m. versus Pendleton (8-13,
4-4) would give the Eagles the
title.
The Eagles had an impres-
sive effort in Game 1 of a
May 1 doubleheader versus
The Dalles (10-11, 4-4), as they
overpowered the Riverhawks
in a 12-2 lopsided victory. The
Dalles responded though in
the nightcap, coming back to
get a split with a 10-6 win.
“It’s very important to
play well in a rivalry series
like this,” said Harjo. “It was
good that we went into the
first game and hit the ball as
well as we did and it helped
take the pressure off our de-
fense a little bit. Patrick Har-
vey (starting pitcher) did a
really good job with his solid
pitching performance.”
In Game 1, HRV jumped
out in front 6-0 in the top of
the first inning after sending
10 batters to the plate. A
three-run triple by Riley Van
Hoose (2 for 2, walk), an RBI
triple by Chase Lariza (1 for
3) and a RBI triple by Kam
Walker helped propel the Ea-
gles to the early lead.
The Dalles came back in
the bottom half of the first
with two runs, trimming it to
6-2 after one inning. The
Riverhawks failed to score
for the remainder of the
game. Pitcher Harvey had
everything well under con-
trol on the mound, while the
Eagles played error-free de-
fense. Harvey tossed a four-
hitter with three strikeouts
while pitching the complete
game.
HRV’s offense (11 total
hits) continued to shine as
the Eagles extended their
lead to 7-2 in the second and
then upped it to 10-2 in the
third, highlighted by Skyler
Hunter’s two-RBI triple. Kel-
lan Duffy smashed a solo
home run in the fourth that
helped extend the Eagle lead
to 12-2. Following a scoreless
fifth, HRV earned the 10-run
mercy rule win to end the
contest after five innings.
Things didn’t go so well for
the Eagles in Game 2. The
two squads battled to a 1-1
deadlock after two innings.
best by 10 seconds and the third best 1A mark
this season. Freshman teammate Andy Hung
ran his first competitive 800 in 2:29.7, rank-
ing him in the top 10 in district.
Sophomore distance runner Jony Nelson
ran a career double at Southwest, finishing
second in the 3000 in 9:53.6 and sixth in the
1500 in 4:32.1. Both times were mere seconds
off his lifetime bests that he established
when focusing on one distance race per
meet.
Also at Southwest, sophomore Luke Holste
finished fifth in a personal best 18.47 seconds
in the high hurdles. He matched that mark at
Glenwood, where he also had lifetime bests
in the 100 and 200. Field event highlights at
Southwest included sophomore Quinn Roet-
cisoender’s 8-foot mark in the pole vault, and
freshman Makoa Whitaker’s personal best
(by 12 feet) in the javelin at 135 feet. Roet-
cisoender improved on his vault best the
next day at Glenwood, where he cleared 8-6.
Other top marks at Glenwood included: Ryan
Aldrich’s district best 117-10 in the discus;
Mason Bloomster’s 139-4 javelin throw; and
Amy Requa’s 2:53.63 800. Horizon’s girls team
was third (among eight teams) at Glenwood
and the boys squad was fourth.
The Dalles then exploded for
nine runs in the third to
build a 10-1 advantage. The
Riverhawks capitalized on
six third-inning walks, two
Eagle errors and scored on a
wild pitch in the inning to
take control on the score-
board.
After two scoreless in-
nings, the Eagles rallied in
the sixth to get within strik-
ing distance. Eagle leadoff
batter Sk yler Hunter
reached base after a catcher
interference violation by The
Dalles. Then four consecu-
tive Eagle batters reached
base on a free pass with
walks. The Eagles scored a
run on a passed ball, a bases-
loaded walk, and they got
one run across the plate on a
Riverhawk error.
Playing for the first time
since he sustained a frac-
tured jaw April 25 versus
Her miston, Eagle senior
Ryan Ward contributed to
the comeback with a fielder’s
choice RBI to help narrow
the margin to 10-6. Ward had
surgery on his jaw April 28
in Portland and he recovered
quickly and was ready to
play in Friday’s matchup in
The Dalles.
“You just never know how
somebody will react follow-
ing surgery and then coming
back so quickly, so I was real-
ly concerned about him and I
was trying to keep my eye on
him,” said Harjo. “I felt like
he was feeling well enough to
play. Ryan is such a tough kid
and he’s a really good base-
ball player. He did a good job
while pitching four innings
and getting eight strikeouts.
He’s pretty close to being 100-
percent recovered now,
though, and he really looked
good at practice on Monday.”
HRV’s conference-best de-
fense (4.19 runs allowed per
game) stopped the The Dalles
offense in the bottom half of
the sixth. The Eagles had
hoped to continue their
comeback effort in the sev-
enth, but they were unable to
keep their momentum going.
HRV failed to get a hit in the
seventh and the only
baserunner was Harvey, who
reached base after getting hit
by a pitch.
The Dalles outhit HRV 6-2
and the Eagles were victim-
ized by three total errors.
Chase Lariza (1 for 2, walk)
and Duffy (1 for 2, single, two
walks) were the only Eagles
to get a hit in Game 2.

School track records falling like dominoes
It seems hardly a week has gone by this
season without the track stars at Hood
River Valley School smashing some school
record, and this past week was no differ-
ent.
Three runners are now the proud hold-
ers of school records, in addition to other
honors. After breaking Ocean Kuyk-
endall’s 1994 record in the 200-meter dash
the previous week, Jestena Mattson broke
Kuykendall’s 1994 school record of 12.22
seconds in the 100 after Matson ran a 12.01
in the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays in Port-
land on Friday, which was good for second
in the race. Also competing at the meet
was thrower Sebastian Barajas, who didn’t
break any school records this week, but
beat a field of nearly 50 competitors to take
first in the shot put (throw of a 56 feet, 2
inches) and a similar-sized field in discus,
which he also won with a throw of 174-04.
Meanwhile, at the Dean Nice Invite in
Gresham, Parker Kennedy placed first in
pole vault with an attempt of 15-9 breaking
Bill Jones’ record of 15-8 that was set in
1995. The vault puts him at No. 3 in the en-

tire state for the event. Kennedy also had a
good day in the high hurdles, winning with
at time of 15.69, his fastest mark of the sea-
son in the event.
Wrapping up the HRV record smashing
was mid-distance runner Emily Viuhkola,
who won the 400 with a time of 58.38,
breaking the previous record of 58.44 set
in 2010 by Lauren Lloyd. That time now
puts Viuhkola at No. 8 overall in the state
for the event.
Another performance of note came from
freshman Gabriel Campos-Davis, who de-
spite getting seeded in the “slow heat” of
the 400, won the event in a blistering 52.36,
breaking his previous personal record
(which he set last week) by nearly two sec-
onds.
Overall, the boys team finished second
out of 14 teams and the girls finished 10th
out of 13. There will be no Columbia River
Conference “Last Chance” Meet as the
schedule indicates; HRV will next compete
at the CRC District Championships May 13
and 15 in The Dalles with events starting at
3:30 p.m.
