Hazel ‘Maude’ Baskins Hazel “Maude” Baskins passed away at Hawks Ridge Assisted Liv- ing in Hood River on May 1, 2015, at the age of 95. She was born on July 8, 1919, in Gross, Neb., to Fred Bernard Picking and Bertha Eliza- beth (Bishop) Picking. Fred’s broth- er James mar- ried Bertha’s sister Pearl, and the two Hazel ‘Maude’ Baskins families grew to four chil- dren each, as they followed various occupations together, taking them to Wisconsin, Minnesota and Missouri be- fore Fred’s family set out for Oregon in 1937. Fred and his brother James had worked in the Hood River- White Salmon area circa 1910, liked what they saw, and that led them to return here with their families after the De- pression. James and his fami- ly followed along to Odell in 1941. Maude was the only girl in her family, and among her “double” cousins, Bud Pick- ing was the only boy. Maude and her older brother Boyd had received an eighth-grade education before leaving Mis- souri, while her younger brothers Melvin (Chuck) and Vernon completed high school in Odell. For their entire lives, all eight cousins remained as close as if they were from one family. After settling in the Odell area, Maude worked as a housekeeper and also partici- pated in a local youth group. The Baskins family and the Picking families were ac- quainted with each other while living in Missouri, and Maude had attended school there with Leland Baskins, whose family had left for Hood River just a few days prior to the Pickings. Maude and Le- land began dating and were married in Stevenson, Wash., in 1940. In the early 1940s they moved to Paasch Road where Lee was employed as foreman for Kirstina and Allen Paasch for 25 years. Maude worked as a cook’s helper at Pine Grove School, and in the orchards thinning and picking fruit. She also worked in the straw- berry fields for the Yamaki family. Maude was a Cub Scout den mother, and enjoyed sewing, gardening, fishing and camping. When the boys were older, Maude worked in several packing houses, doing jobs such as checking and stamp- ing packed boxes. However, the job she worked at the longest and did very well was sorting fruit. Her favorite group of sorters and employ- er was Bickford Orchards. VOCI ‘Earth Light’ concert May 9-10 Two very different choral masterpieces are the focus of the Voci Community Choir’s next concerts, May 9 at 7 pm, and May 10 at 4 pm. Composer Morten Lau- ridsen was born in Port- land and has been teaching for several years at USC. He maintains a “composing hut” in the San Juan Is- lands and he is widely re- garded as one of America’s most significant choral composers. One of his most b e l o ve d wo rk s i s “ L u x Aeterna,” a setting of sev- eral texts on the theme of light. Drawing in part from t h e Re q u i e m a n d o t h e r Latin sacred poems, “Lux Aeterna” is mystical, joy- ous, and profound. Jazz musician Paul Win- ter composed his “Missa Gaia” (Earth Mass) for the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York. It weaves together many texts from the traditional Latin Mass with the prerecorded sounds of animal songs— wolves, whales, and birds. Winter bases many of the musical themes on the ani- mal songs, and creates a musical experience that celebrates life on Earth, the beauty of the planet and its fragility. The concerts will be at the Wy’east Middle School performing arts center, and there is a $10 suggested do- nation. For more information, go to cgoaonline.blogspot.com.
