Military vehicles take
center stage at WAAAM
G RADING
A ND K ITING
While construction workers labor on Friday at
the Port of Hood River Nichols Basin trail pro-
ject, kiteboarders take to the Columbia River for
some warm-and-windy day recreation. The
lawn at the Event was filled with kiteboarders,
who have the option of launching from the
Event Site or from the adjacent Sandbar, which
is currently enlarged due to low water. The trail
project is proceeding on schedule, with creation
of a new beach area and construction of retain-
ing walls and stone seating walls.

Keeping with tradition,
the May 9 Second Saturday
events at the Western An-
tique Aeroplane and Auto-
mobile Museum will feature
the vehicles of the American
armed forces.
WAAAM’s military fleet of
airplanes and automobiles
from World War I to the Viet-
nam War will be flying and
driving as part of the action.
For some extra flair, the
museum will be performing
a small flag retirement cere-
mony at 2 p.m. as a test run
for a much larger flag retire-
ment ceremony in the fall
with the aid of local Boy
Scout troops.
By popular demand, the
restoration shop tour will
occur two times during the
event — once at 11 a.m. and
again at 1 p.m. — so that
everyone can see what it
takes to keep living history
truly alive and running.
As a thank you to past and
current military personnel,
the active duty American
military admission price is
complementary for the day
(with service card) and veter-
ans of any era will receive
half priced admission for
our May 9 Second Saturday
event.
