‘Tutu Trot’ helps Lila May, 4, in cancer fight
How much can we inspire
a community to give when
its most talked-about little
girl is facing the cancer fight
of her life, always smiling
despite the grim odds? In
Hood River and beyond,
that’s the question that’s
been on the minds of hun-
dreds of people, particularly
those who are making tutus
and planning to wear other
fun costumes to show their
spirit and support in the 2nd
Annual Lila May Tutu Trot.
The walk/run, scheduled
for May 9, at Hood River’s
Mark O’Hatfield Trail and
Tunnel, will mark the sec-
ond time that residents of
the Gorg e re gion and
throughout Ore gon will
gather for this kids’ race and
3k/5k/10k
walk/r un
fundraiser.
The proceeds will benefit
Lila May Schow, a local 4-
year-old who has been un-
dergoing arduous, expensive
treatments for neuroblas-
toma since she was diag-
nosed a month after her sec-
ond birthday. For the past
year, she’s repeatedly trav-
elled to both Portland and
New York hospitals for med-
ical treatments.
However, in light of recent
hurdles, she is now partici-
pating in a clinical, costly
trial that her family, friends
and all those who know
about her can only hope will
save her life.
“As a parent, you will go to
the end of the world and
back if its means your sick
child gets her right to live,
not to mention be healthy
enough to take another bal-
let class and dance alongside
her many friends,” said
Heidi Hall, Lila May’s moth-
er.

TUTU TIME MAY 9
Advance registration is
strongly encouraged, and pack-
et pickup for runners is at
Shortt Supply (Friday, May 8, 3-
6 p.m., 116 Oak St., Hood River)
the day before the event. Kids
12 and under walk/run for free.
“The support and love
have been amazing, but the
journey is not over. We sim-
ply refuse to stop hunting for
or pursuing viable options
no matter the cost. We are
equally grateful that so
many are validating our feel-
ings and the need to do this
… it’s so very humbling and
hard at times to keep asking
for this vital help. But we are
grateful beyond words.”
According to Jenny
Brown Lorenzen, a local
nurse, friend of Lila May’s
and her family, and the Tutu
Trot’s lead organizer, this
year’s event turnout is ex-
pected to far surpass last
year’s. A good “problem” to
have, this is driving costs up
for insurance, liability and
other fees in spite of some
relief being provided by
local sponsors, including A
Kids’ Dental Zone, Shortt
Supply, Katie’s MoJava,
Stearns Lending, LLC, Co-
lumbia Gorge Graphics, G.
Williker’s Toy Shoppe and
Rosauers.
“We are so grateful to
these businesses — those
named as well as the few
wishing to remain anony-
mous,” Brown Lorenzen
says.
