Allinger Nelson, who has up-
coming shows in Australia,
Seattle, and London, in Sun-
day’s “Soul In Motion” fashion
show and forum at the Port
Pavilion Building. Above, orga-
nizer Debora Lorang of Lorang
Fine Art, thanks participants
for a successful first year of “Women in Motion,” the weekend-long
event that put the spotlight on the creative abilities of female de-
signers, artists, and authors. The runway show, the first in memory in
Cascade Locks, also featured Mongolian-influenced works by Lisha
Xie, and painted fabric gowns by Parisian designer Larissa Noury.
Asked what her biggest influence was after three days in Cascade
Locks, Noury said, “Nature, which I always use in my works, and this
place is so beautiful it has given me more inspiration.”
‘Mad Hatter’ cake decorating contest open
All cake decorating enthusi-
asts can show off their talents
and compete for four $100 cash
prizes by entering the “Once
Upon a Cake” decorating con-
test as a part of the fifth annu-
al Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, an
afternoon event, from 2-4 p.m.
on May 17, hosted by the Co-
lumbia Gorge Hotel. The Alice
in Wonderland-themed cake
decorating contest will have
four categories with cash
prizes open to all ages and abil-
ities, ranging from children
five years of age up to profes-
sionals. The cakes are sure to
add more imagination to this
already storybook afternoon.
The beautiful Columbia
Plant class
series starts
Columbia Gorge Communi-
ty College, in partnership
with the Discovery Center,
will offer a series of plant
stewardship class this spring.
A group of three workshops,
each including a presentation
and field trip, can be taken as
a series or individually. In-
structor Barbara Robinson is
an expert on Gorge plants. She
has been in charge of restora-
tion on the Discover Center
grounds since 1997.
■ Wildflower Stewardship,
April 30 — In spring, our hills
bloom with color, and people
come from far and wide to see
this special show. What are
these flowers? Can you grow
them, and how long do they
take to grow? What are the
threats to them? How can you
protect them? This session
will explore those questions
with a presentation and a field
trip to look at wildflowers.
■ Oregon White Oaks Pre-
sentation, May 20 — All native
oaks in Washington and
northern Oregon are one
species, yet take many forms,
from “scrub oaks” to huge
trees, and are very important
to many animals.
■ Weeds of the Gorge, June
4 — Plant species introduced
from other places can some-
times flourish so well in a new
location that they crowd out
native species and cause great
damage. In our area, what are
our “weeds” and how do you
identify them?
Register online or by call-
ing 541-506-6011. Cost of the se-
ries is $69, or $29 each.
Gorge Hotel will again be the
setting for this fun and family
friendly benefit for Opportuni-
ty Connections, a local non-
profit organization providing
services to people with intel-
lectual and developmental dis-
abilities in our community.
Don’t be late for this very im-
portant date! Join in the fun
with Alice and friends for this
most enjoyable afternoon of
tea and cakes and Wonderland
activities for all ages.
