beth Cole.

son. He was a
K a n s a s S t at e g r a d u at e,
holding degrees in architec-
tural engineering and ar-
chitecture. He was a high
level manager with Boeing
(Wichita) for over 35 years
and, upon his move to Hood
River, opened his residence
design business. As many
people have attested – he
was the best-dressed man in
H o o d R ive r, o f t e n s e e n
cruising through town on
his scooter in his suit and
tie. He was a man of in-
tegrity and his constant
g e n e ro s i t y ch a n g e d t h e
lives around him.
Dale enjoyed golf, model
railroading, cars, playing
the organ and piano, his
scooter, and especially play-
ing good bridge with
friends. Being a Midwest-
erner, he also knew how to
m a ke wo n d e r f u l h o m e -
made strawberry ice cream!
(The vanilla wasn’t bad ei-
ther.) Many occasions were
made sweeter with the gift
of “his” ice cream for
dessert.
Dale is preceded in death
by his parents and his wife
of 40 years, Martha Pearl
(Parker) Pierson, who died
Feb. 14, 1997.
He is survived by “The
Love of His Life,” Elizabeth
Cole, of Hood River, Ore.;
his son, Joel C. Pierson, of
Big Fork, Mont.,; his daugh-
ter and son-in-law, J.R.
Windsor and David L. Wind-
sor, of Hood River; his
daughter Subhadra D. Katz,
of Hood River; and his
granddaughters, Skye M.
Windsor, of Santa Clara,
Calif., and Sierra M. Wind-
sor, of Pullman, Wash.
An ice cream social in his
honor – featuring his Fa-
mous Ice Cream – will be
announced soon.

Chavez
Aida Elisea Chavez, 47,
passed away at Providence
St. Vincent Medical Center
on March 7, 2015, surround-
ed by each and every one of
her family members who
love her beyond words. She
is the wife of Miguel
Chavez and mother to four
beautiful children: Edgar,
21, Alex, 17, Cassandra, 15,
and the baby of the family,
Ana Luisa, 9.
Aida was born April 7,
1967, in Sahuayo, Michoa-
can, Mexico. She is the
daughter of Ramiro Elisea
and Teresa Sanchez. Aida
was employed at Maxam
Nutraceutics, where she
was a shipping manager for
12 years.
Aida loved being with her
family and friends. Her
children were her life. She
loved taking them to the
mountain and watch them
snowboard or to the river to
swim. She enjoyed being
with her family at all the
many events they may have
and was always the first one
to volunteer to help. She
was there for her mom and
dad to help them with any-
thing they may need at any
time of day.

death by her sister Maria.

milia. Aida fue una mujer
mas que hermosa en todo el
sentido de la palabra interi-
or y exteriormente, todo
aquel que tuvo el placer de
conocerla sabe la calidad de
humano que ella era. Ale-
gre, risuena, llena de anec-
dotas e historias que provo-

Elaine Mohr
Elaine Mohr, 92, of Eu-
gene, Ore., passed away on
March 10, 2015, from age-re-
lated complications and
cancer. Elaine was born in
Hood River, Ore., on Sept.
20, 1922, and
was
the
daughter of
Leo and Stel-
la Drake.
Elaine was
well-traveled
as a child as
Elaine Mohr her parents
m o v e d
around Oregon in search of
oppor tunity. They made
stops in Heppner, Milwau-
kee and Klamath Falls,
Medford and finally back to
Hood River. As with most
from her generation, the

was an avid Beaver fan
until the end. Elaine was
very proud of her custom-
made Beaver blanket and
could be seen marching
around Sheldon Park As-
sisted Living on game day
in one of her many OSU
outfits. One bright orange
spot amongst a sea of green
and yellow. It is not easy
being a Beaver in Eugene.

Elaine was preceded in
death by her husband of 67
years, Ted Mohr. She is sur-
vived by her three sons:

Francisco; and three great-
grandchildren. She will be
greatly missed by her fami-
ly and friends.

who assisted Elaine over the

Clinic Senior Health & Well-
ness Center, the staff at Shel-
don Park Assisted Living,
Janet McDonald, Kirk Lath-
am, and the wonderful nurs-
es that assisted her in her
final days at the Sacred
Heart University District
Acute Care for Elders (ACE)
unit.
A very special word of ap-
preciation goes out to Dr. Jae
H. Lee and his staff at the
Willamette Valley Cancer In-
stitute who were responsible
for Elaine’s care over the last
seven years.
A Funeral Mass will be
held Tuesday, March 17, at 11
a.m. at St. Jude Catholic
Church in Eugene, with a
burial following the service,
1 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Ceme-
tery in Eugene.

Jim grew up mostly in
Por tland and descended
from early pioneers in east-
ern Washington. He served
an enlistment in the Oregon
National Guard in an ar-
tillery unit. On Dec. 7, 1941,
Japan attacked Pearl Harbor
and Jim enlisted in the Navy
that day. A month later after
a rushed boot camp in San
Diego, Jim was a crewman
aboard the USS Sabine (AO-
25) as it sailed into Pearl
Harbor. Aboard the USS
Sabine, Jim sailed all over
the Pacific and was involved
in most major naval engage-
ments including the Doolit-
tle raid on Tokyo.
Jim loved to tell stories
and his favorites were of his
time spent in the Navy, his
wife and daughters, and
growing up in Portland. He
was an expert scrounger
able to find equipment, food,
and entertainment for his
crew where others failed. He
rose to the rank of Petty Of-
ficer 2nd Class.
After the war, Jim attend-
ed the University of Oregon
and Vanport College and
found work at the Hanford
site near Richland, Wash. It
was at Hanford that he met a
young chemist from Okla-
homa, Ruth Stanford. After
a brief courtship, they were
married on Feb. 4, 1950. In
1962, Jim and Ruth adopted
Grace and Luci as newborns
and their life changed forev-
er! After raising two daugh-
ters, Jim retired from Han-
ford in 1983 and he and Ruth
moved to Florence, Ore.
They enjoyed fishing and
being near the ocean. Ruth’s
illness brought them back to
Richland to be near family.
After Ruth’s passing in
2007, Jim was heartbroken
but determined to, in his
words, “live until he died.”
He moved to Hawks Ridge
Assisted Living Community
in Hood River in 2010 to be
near Luci. The last several
years, Heart of Hospice
managed Jim’s health care.
He was very fond and appre-
ciative of the staff and vol-
unteers. They went “above
and beyond” and even pro-
vided him a dinner of Rocky
Mountain oysters! He was
also very happy with the
care he received from the
staff of Hawks Ridge. The
caregivers were very special
to him. The family cannot
thank Heart of Hospice and
Hawks Ridge enough for all
they did for Jim!
A memorial service was
held on Friday, March 13, at
H aw k s R i d g e. J i m a n d
Ruth’s ashes will be spread
in Florence, Ore., at a later
date. Memorial donations
may be made to Heart of
Hospice.

Great Depression was diffi-
cult and left a permanent
imprint on her memory and
life.
Elaine graduated from
Hood River High School in
1940. During her senior
year, she was crowned the
Hood River American Le-
gion Queen. On July 21,
1940, Elaine led the 20th an-
nual American Le gion
climb from the Mount Hood
Legion Camp to the summit
of Mount Hood. Elaine be-
came the first Legion
Queen to lead this challeng-
ing night time climb to the
summit.
After high school Elaine
went on to attend and grad-
uate from Oregon State Uni-
versity. Following Elaine to
OSU was her childhood
sweetheart, Ted Mohr. With
the onset of World War II,
Ted enlisted in the Navy
and was off to war. Just
prior to Ted leaving, Elaine
and Ted married in a mili-
tary ceremony in Hood
River on June 3, 1944.
Elaine graduated from
OSU in 1944 with a degree
in education and home eco-
nomics. Her first teaching
job was in Seaside, Ore.,

school home economics.
Elaine had the misfortune
of renting an apartment
a b ove t h e o l d S e a s i d e
Aquarium. She heard stu-
dents squawk by day and
sea lions by night. After one
year in Seaside she moved
to Seattle where Ted had
had been stationed briefly
before being deployed to the
A l e u t i a n I s l a n d s. A f t e r
World War II Elaine and Ted
lived in Seattle for two
years. They later moved to
Portland.
In 1950 Ted was recalled
by the Navy for the Korean
War. He was stationed in
Bremerton, Wash. Elaine
and young sons Tom and
Richard joined Ted on Bre-
merton Island. In 1953, after
t h e Ko re a n Wa r e n d e d ,
Elaine and Ted relocated
their young family to Eu-
gene. Soon after their ar-
rival in Eugene their third
son Jay was born.
After raising her three
sons, Elaine retur ned to
teaching in Eugene; first,
part-time at Colin Kelly Ju-
nior High and then finally
full-time at Madison Junior
High. Elaine taught home
economics. She retired in
1982 after teaching at Madi-
son for 24 years. Elaine was
responsible for teaching
several thousand young
ladies (and a few young
men) how to cook and sew.
It was not uncommon for
Elaine to be approached by
women in Eugene who in-
formed her that she had
been their teacher. Two of
her recent caregivers and a
nurse even recognized and
acknowledged Elaine.
Elaine spent her retired
years traveling domestical-
l y a n d i n t e r n a t i o n a l l y,
square dancing, gardening
and enjoying her four
grandchildren and three
