Custom Skylight of Portland installs
150-pound 4-by-5 panes Monday on
the skylight atop the new public re-
stroom at Third and State. The facility
is scheduled to open by April 10, ac-
cording to city manager Steve Wheel-
er, and is the last major piece of the
2013-15 State Street Urban Renewal
project. It includes a covered meeting
area and a heated interior, and will
be the designated bike hub location
for Hood River, with bike racks as
well as a space for forthcoming pub-
lic art. Some revisions to concrete
work must also be completed, ac-
cording to project manager Gary Lin-
demyer of the City of Hood River. The
restrooms will be the first ADA
amenities in downtown Hood River.
Currently the only public facility is a
single unisex restroom located on
the ground floor of City Hall.
GO! Local Business Plan Competition planned
Launching or growing a
sustainable business in the
Gorge?
Gorge Owned (GO!) is
pleased to introduce the first
GO! Local Business Plan Com-
petition in conjunction with
its annual Earth Day event.
Both start-ups and existing
businesses in the Gorge are
invited to apply. Because this
is a social impact business
plan competition, GO! is seek-
ing entrepreneurs and busi-
nesses that have a triple-bot-
tom-line mission that includes
care for the planet, care for
people, and economic viabili-
ty. Although all scales of busi-
nesses are welcome to apply,
“The Big 5: What Parents
and Teachers Need to Know
about Learning to Read,”
will be held March 10 from
6:30-8 p.m. at the Hood River
Hotel.
Presenter Cheryl Antho-
ny, Successful Learning Ed-
ucational Services, LLC,
will talk about comprehen-
sion, phonics, phonemic
awareness and fluency. The
event is free and is being
s p o n s o r e d by D e c o d i n g
Dyslexia.

submitted business plans
and choose up to five entries
to present their idea in-per-
son at the Gorge Owned
Earth Day event to be held on

Short pitches will be made to
the audience of the business
concept and efforts being
made towards sustainability.
Based on those live pitches,
the audience will pick the
top three candidates through
a simple paper vote. The win-
ning candidates will then be
eligible to apply for a busi-
ness loan up to $5,000
through our partners at the
Kiva Zip program, a not-for-
profit micro enterprise lend-
ing program. More informa-

Shack who is generously do-
nating their space for later
that evening.

the Gorge has been hosted by
Columbia Gorge Earth Cen-
ter (CGEC), which merged
with Gorge Owned (GO!) in
2013. GO! is a member-sup-
ported organization with a
mission to strengthen con-
nections between people,
ecology and economy to build
a healthy community in the
Columbia Gorge. GO! pro-
grams include Gorge Earth
Day, Gorge Green Drinks,
Sense of Place Lecture Se-
ries, the Gorge Green Home
Tour, GO! Local Month and
the GO! Solar campaign.
