Melvin Lucas
Melvin G. “Mel” Lucas
passed away Monday, Feb. 16,
2015, after a long battle with
cancer in The Dalles, Ore.,
with his family by his side.
Mel was born in Alexandria,
Minn., the fourth of eight
boys, to Paul Harold Wesley
and Mable
(Irwin) Lucas
on June 7,
1933.
When Mel
was 6 his
family moved
to
Hood
River, Ore.,
Melvin Lucas where Mel at-
tended local
schools. He
met Darline James in 1952,
and they were united in mar-
riage and moved to Cascade
Locks, Ore. Together they
were blessed with five chil-
dren: Melody, Terry, Cal,
Scott and Robyn. In 1962 the
family moved to Auburn,
Wash., where Mel worked for
Miles Sand and Gravel. In
1971 they moved to Canby,
Ore., where they lived until
Darline passed away after a
long fight with cancer.
In 1976 Mel met and mar-
ried Patricia “Pat” Crews.
Pat brought with her three
children: Carolyn, Darrell
and Lyle. They moved to
Hood River and combined
their families. Mel was em-
ployed in the roofing busi-
ness. In 1985 Mel and Pat
moved to Arizona where he
and Pat managed senior and
assisted living facilities. In
1991 they returned to Ore-
gon, moving to The Dalles,
where they opened Flagstone
Assisted Living. In 1998 Mel
retired from Flagstone.
Mel and Pat enjoyed 39
years together, sharing good
times with their eight chil-
dren, 12 grandchildren and
21 great-grandchildren. Also,
the couple were foster par-
ents to many children who
were in crisis situations.
Through the years the cou-
ple enjoyed traveling. In ad-
dition to numerous road
trips they loved cruising and
took several trips to Alaska
plus Hawaii and through the
Panama Canal where they
visited several countries in
Central America.
Mel served four years with
the National Guard. He was
also an active member of
several organizations includ-
ing the Mid-Columbia Veter-
ans Memorial Committee,
helping with the building
and completion of the monu-
ments at Sorosis Park. He
was also involved with the
Mid-Columbia Community
Meals program, serving on
the board several years in ad-
dition to being president of
the service group.
Mel touched the lives of
many people with his gener-
ous spirit, soft heart and
helping hands. He was also
well known for “Mel’s Fa-
mous Fudge.” Numerous of-
fices, professional people
plus his large contingency of
close friends were always
pleased when he dropped by
with a plate of the “best
fudge in the Gorge.”
Mel was preceded in death

Seedy Saturday scheduled at
Rockford Grange March 14
Seedy Saturday is coming up. This
is Rockford Community Grange’s sec-
ond annual Seed Exchange and Give-
away, an opportunity to obtain (free)
seeds from the Rockford Grange Seed
Bank and other seed collections from
local growers. We welcome any extra
seeds you have to share (but not nec-
essary), and we are especially inter-
ested in expanding our collection of
native Mexican seed that may be ac-
climatized to our region.
Katrina Jerome from Grow Organic
will demonstrate seed starting for
new growers and give tips on improv-
ing germination, and the Master Gar-
deners will be running a plant clinic
to help diagnose plant problems and
share information about soil testing.
All are welcome any time between 4-7
p.m., and are invited to stay for the
Folklore Society’s dance afterwards.
The Rockford Grange is located at
4250 Barrett Drive (next to Westside
Fire Department). For more info
please call 541-806-2344.

On January 29, the Hood
River First Book Advisory
Board awarded the following
grants to these literacy pro-
grams: Oregon Child Devel-
opment Coalition (Migrant
Head Start), $1656 for 826
books for 212 children; Mid-
Columbia Children’s Council
(Head Start), $977 for 488
books to 127 children; Hood
River Middle School, $336 for
168 books to 28 youth; and
Hood River Valley High
School, $156 for 78 books to 13
teen parents and their chil-
dren.
Each student will get an
average of 5 new books to
keep for their personal use.
The funds totaling $3,125
were from the Hood River
Lions Foundation Trust,
United Way of the Columbia
Gorge, and individual dona-
tions from the local commu-
nity.
First Book/Hood River is a
local community ef for t
whose mission is to promote
literacy by giving books to
low income children (birth to
18 years) who have few books
of their own. Often the chil-
dren/youth are involved in
selecting the books that they
would enjoy reading.
First Book/Hood River is
part of the national effort at
www.firstbook.org. Last Sep-
tember the national First
Book program made some
changes to their literacy ef-
fort.
The organization is now
called “Team First Book.”
Most of the national staff
will work on awarding book
g rants and fundraising
rather than working on de-
veloping new Advisory
Boards.
Advisory Boards will now
send funds to the national of-
fice when grants are award-
ed. Team First Book/Hood
River will continue to oper-
ate under the assistance and
approval of the national ef-
fort which is a 501(c )3 non-
profit organization.
Instead of awarding book
grants once a year as the Ad-
visory Board has done since
they started in 2000, the
Board will be awarding book
grants about four times a

“Roman Moretti, teacher
at the Klahre House Alterna-
tive School wrote the follow-
ing story after the school re-
ceived a First Book grant in
December 2014:
“At the Next Door Klahre
House Alternative School,
our students live in foster
homes where they have min-
imal possessions, including
books.
“Our small library, which
consists of only six bookcas-
es, allows students to borrow
books; however, it is limited
in its selection. Receiving
grants from First Book has
allowed our students the op-
portunity to choose their
own books to keep forever.
“Recently, the students
were allocated $22 each to
purchase books through
First Book. Some students
were able to buy more than a
do z en books with that
amount.
“One student in particular
has greatly benefited from
this grant. He has spent most
of his life living in various
foster homes and has been in
treatment programs since
the age of 11. Now at 16, he
has a great passion for read-
ing and writing.
“Currently, he is spending
most of his free time devel-
oping and writing a full-
length science fiction novel,
often approaching his Lan-
guage Arts teacher before
class for feedback and sug-
gestions for improvement.
“This student has very few
possessions of his own, but
thanks to our recent book
grant, he has now added over
a dozen new books to his per-
sonal library which will not
only allow him to strengthen
his reading and comprehen-
sion skills, but also provide
additional inspiration and
guidance for his own writ-
ing.”
