Tax help available
through April 15
The AARP Tax Aide pro-
gram will be offering free
preparation and e-filing of
income taxes for seniors
and low- to moderate-in-
come taxpayers through
April 15.
Taxpayers must bring
photo ID and social security
cards/ITIN papers for all
persons on the return in ad-
dition to all pertinent 2014
tax papers for income and
deductions, and health in-
surance infor mation for
2014 for all persons on the
return. Also bring the 2013
tax return copy. The pro-
gram does not allow prepa-
ration of returns which in-
clude rentals and compli-
cated small businesses.
Help is available Mondays,
2-7 p.m., downstairs at the
Hood River Library, and
Thursdays, 2-7 p.m., at the
Hood River Valley Adult
Center; use north door.

attend a presentation by
Seattle cinema scholar Lance
Rhoades, titled “American
Indians in Cinema: Partici-
pation Onscreen and Behind
the Scene” on Saturday, Feb.
28 at 2 p.m. in the library’s
Sprint/Baker Gallery. This is
the fifth and final event in a
successful month-long series
of Saturday afternoon pro-
grams held in connection
with KOOBDOOGA: Com-
munity Reads 2015, inspired
by the book “Short Nights of
the Shadow Catcher: The
Epic Life and immortal Pho-
tographs of Edward Curtis”
by Seattle author Timothy
Egan.
The public image of
American Indians has been
more defined by cinema
than that of any other peo-
ple in history. When one
considers that nearly 25
percent of all films made
from 1900 to 1950 were West-
erns (frequently represent-
ing American Indians as vi-
olent obstacles to progress),
the lingering implications
are staggering. In his pre-
sentation, Rhoades will
prompt us to consider the
formidable role cinema has
played in producing, perpet-
uating and challenging per-
ceptions of American Indi-
ans, past and present.
Rhoades completed his
graduate studies in Com-
parative Literature and
Cinema Studies at the Uni-
ve r s i t y o f Wa s h i n g t o n ,
where he taught several
courses on American Indi-
ans in Cinema. He has also
been a researcher and in-
structor in the University of
Washington American Indi-
an Studies, Comparative
Literature, Cinema Studies,
and Comparative History of
Ideas programs. He was a
recipient of the UW’s ‘Ex-
c e l l e n c e i n Te a c h i n g ’
award. Rhoades has pre-
sented talks in the Middle
East, Asia and Europe on
cultural history in film.
Each year he teaches a
course in the humanities at
the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology. Rhoades lec-
tures on the history of liter-
ature and film in conjunc-
tion with the Speakers Bu-
reau of Humanities Wash-
ington and he serves as a
Program Director for the
Mercer Island Library and
Arts Council.

Hood River County Sheriff’s Office said a woman received minor injuries as the result of a motor vehicle that occurred in Odell
at around 4 p.m. Sunday. Sheriff Matt English reported that Nancy Rivera, 61, of The Dalles, was traveling on Chevron Drive near
the vicinity of Diamond Fruit when her vehicle, a 2005 Ford Crown Victoria, left the roadway, hit a patch of gravel and went into
a ditch, landing on its side. HRCSO, West Side Fire District, Wy’East Fire District, and Hood River Fire and EMS all responded to
the incident. English said no citations were issued.
Delta Kappa hosts Spring Fling Bingo in March
The Fourth Annual Delta
Kappa Spring Fling Bingo
will be held March 14 at the
Best Wester n Plus Hood
River Inn Shoreline Room,

a luncheon, Bingo, silent
and live auctions and door

Hugs is a snuggler who lives up to his name
This week volunteers at
Adopt A Dog have selected
Hugs as the program’s adopt-
able pet of the week:
Hugs is about 2 years old,
12 pounds, and a Chi-
huahua/Pug — or Chug. He
showed up a nervous wreck,
afraid to meet new people,
but other dogs helped him
see we were pretty cool to
hang with!
Hugs was brought in with
Kisses and she really helped
him settle down and learn to
be a lap dog, and they were
stinkin’ cute, but Kisses got
adopted right away, leaving
Hugs to find his own
family. He’s doing very well
in his foster home, and is
quite the character! He’s
playful, and can be silly and
sweet, but really more of a
snuggler than a player! Hugs
likes to give hugs.
Seriously! He nuzzles into
your shoulder or neck when
he’s carried, and will hug
your arm of hands when
being carried! It’s so cute!
Hugs is a bit of a sensitive
soul and needs calm, pa-
tience and time to adjust, so
we’re not recommending a
home with small kids at this
time. And leashes used to re-
ally freak this poor fella out,
but even that is something
he’s getting used to. But he’s
great off-leash, and stays
with the pack, right by your
side. The foster home is
working on those skills and
he makes improvements
every day, so we’re hopeful.
So, if you’d like the perfect
huggable lap dog who looks
at you with those big, sweet,
loving eyes, doesn’t need a
ton of exercise, and is house-
trained, then look no fur-
ther! Hugs will be waiting for
your call. He’s current on
shots, microchipped and will
be neutered later this week.
The adoption fee for this hug-
gable Chug is $175. The fee to
adopt is charged to recoup
standard veterinary expens-
