T RAILER H ITCH
A runaway yard debris trailer dam-
aged St. Mark’s Episcopal Church
entryway Wednesday just before 3
p.m. Kenton Chandler of Hood River
Towing prepares to remove the
trailer from where it struck the
church’s south entryway. Herman
Lopez of Green Machine said he
was towing the trailer eastbound
when the tow chain snapped, send-
ing the trailer into the side of the
building. No one was injured. The
trailer hitched knocked out some
shingle siding and the handrail.
There was no apparent damage to
the foundation, though the full ex-
tent will be known once an inspec-
tion is done, according to Rev. Anna
Carmichael, who was in her office
and heard the trailer slam into the
building. The trailer narrowly
missed Carmichael’s parked vehicle.
No citation was issued.

Scholar of the Month
program starts at HRV
In an effort to highlight
and recognize outstanding
students, Hood River Valley
High School recently insti-
tuted a Scholar of the Month
program.
Students are honored for
their outstanding perfor-
mance within the different
de par tments at HRVHS.
Teachers in the different de-
partment areas nominate
students, whereupon the De-
partment Chair makes a rec-
ommendation to the school
administration for that
month’s outstanding stu-
dent.
Students are recognized in
the following department
areas: English, Mathematics,
Science, Social Studies, The
Ar ts, Career Education,
Leadership, World Lan-
guages, PE/Health and Prin-
cipal’s Choice. The Princi-
pal’s Choice represents stu-
dents who were nominated
by a teacher, counselor or ad-
ministrator that has been
displaying excellence in a
content area that may not
“fit” into any of the afore-
mentioned departments.
Students of the month re-
ceive a gift card to a local cof-
fee shop, a certificate with
their name and their picture
displayed on a new Student
of the Month board, promi-
nently placed in the front en-
trance of HRVHS, near the
main office. Additionally,
each student will be recog-
nized at the Evening of Ex-
cellence awards night in
May.
HRVHS Principal Rich
Polkinghorn said, “We are
proud of the hard work these
outstanding students have
put into their academics.
Being selected as student of
the month is a formal ac-
knowledgement of diligence
and work ethic. One of our
focal points for the year is to
bring into focus the out-
standing academic achieve-
ments of our students. This
is one way in which we are
doing that. These students
are to be commended.”
