Pell of Pendleton ship ped the four birds t N. O. Rodermer In Whltesvllle. He liberated them with his other pigeons and they Imme diately disappeared. Upon receiving a letter from him telling of his loss Mrs. Pell went to her pigeon lofts and found the four birds resting on their home roosts. All were In good condi tion. ' "In my opinion this constitutes the greatest menace to the orchards at the present time," said Mr. Castner, "1 have Inspected a number recently which were fairly peppered with an thacnose and their ownerg did not know It. In many cases the trees have not been sprayed properly in the fall. It has been left until too late and the rains have destroyed the power of the spray. "It is important that -this pest be kept under control because I have found orchards that have been ren dered practically worthless in a cou pie of years by Its usuages. Hinrichs, wid ow of PeterHinrichs and one of the pioneer residents of the valley, died Saturday morning at 10 o'clock In a Portland hospital. The cause of death wag given as exhaustion follow ing an operation which was perform ed for the relief of intestinal troub les. The body was brought to this city Saturday evening and the funer al was held yesterday afternoon from Hartniess' Chapel. Rev. J. L. llersh ner officiating. Interment wag made at Idlewilde Cemetery. Mrs. Hinrichs was born in Holstein. (lermany, and was 62 years and five months old at the time of her death. Site grew to womanhood In that coun try and wag married there to Mr. Hin richs. They moved to this country about. 37 years ago, coming directly to Hood River, where Mr. Hinrichs had already purchased a homestead in the Hnrrett district. Thig homestead Is one of the few that has been maintain ed intact since the valley became sub divided Into smaller tracts. Kight children, three sons and five girls, survive Mrs. Hinrichs. They are as follows: Krnst of Montaun who arrived Monday for the funeral. Max of Honolulu, Ralph of this place, Mrs. Clara Markley of the I'pper Valley, Mrs. Hiilclah Craton of Mos- er.
