WOMEN TRAPPED IN RAID
Gambling Establishment Uncovered In
Residence District of Oakland, Cal.
Oakland, Cal. The police uncover
ed a poolroom for women In a raid
ea a private house In the heart of a
residential section. Mrs. Julia Acker
man, the alleged proprietress; Mrs.
Adelia Burnett, Mrs. Joseph Roebling
and Rodolph Abraham were arrested.
Half a dozen other women and several
men were trapped, but the police re
leased them owing, it was explained,
to lack of sufficient- evidence.
For two weeks, according to the po
lice, numbers of women had been en
tering the Ackerman residence. In
spectors Thomas Wood and St. Clair
Modgkins stole up to the front door
and forced an entrance. Mrs. Acker
man, Wood reported, leaped at him
and clutched his thnoat. He said he
shook her off and with Hodgklns ran
into a room fully equipped as a pool
roc m. Results of the Alan, Idaho,
races were being received over a tele
phone wire from San Franclsc.

CHRISTIAN CHURCH NOTICE

church next Sunday as usual, Sunday
School 9:45 and preaching and com
munion following at 11 o'clock. The
pastor, J. H. Swift, is home from the
East where he has been for the past
two months at the bedside of his
mother, and will preach morning and
evening.
The Sunday School will render a
Mothers' Program Sunday morning at
the closing of the Sunday School ses
sion. Each mother of the church is
requested by the superintendent to
be present. Everybody has a special
invitation. Be on time. At 10:30
the program begins.
The Endeavor is now In a contest.

Dr. C. Schiltz, owner of the Pomona
orchard of Dayton, Wash., was elect
ed president of the board of trustees
of the Walla Walla District Distribu
tors' agency, at a meeting of that
body Saturday aternoon. H. G.
Barnes was elected secretary and the
ottice of manager offered him. He Is
considering the proposition.

contract to be used between the agen
: cy which is to be a sub central of
' the North Pacific Distributors' of Spo
kane, and the locals of the district,
