THE HOOD RIVER NEWS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 1913 x x t After the Doctor-- THE DRUGGIST The doctor's work is only half what has to be done for the pa tient. And if the druggist be lacking in ability and care the prescription might as well have never been written. But we make a special.study of each case and our own medical knowledge is thorough enough to be of great use to us in those sometimes oc curring oases when the doctor, in his haste, makes a slight error. The bill was introduced in Congress on April 17. Hood River has several times protested against the reserve being so extended as to prevent the construction of an automobile road across the range. The bill provides that none of the enlarged reserve, a8 proposed, shall be sold or withdrawn from said re serve, and no railroad or other road shall be constructed therein, and no timber shall be cut or removed, and right acquired for the use of water for power, light, irrigation, domestic, or any other purposes, except by said city of Portland. Davidson, who returned the last of the week from a meeting of the board of director of the North Di tributors" Asso iatlon at Spokane, re ported that, good progress has been made despite the fact that certain organizations w hich ha v.; been forc ing the Northwest to market on the consignment plan are fighting tooth and nail against the new co-operative movement. Mr. Davidson Baid: "It Is very probable that the ton nage that will pass through the asso ciation this year will -xceed 10,000 cars of fruit. The policy of the asso ciation will be to make f. o. b. sales in every Instance at satisfactory, prices to buyer and seller. The auction sys tem that led this year to the sacrifice of the goods, together with the con signment method that was so injur ious and did more to bear down the market this season than all other in fluences combined, will be no part or methods that have been the prevail ing market plans of other shipping organizations will not be followed by the North Pacific Distributors' Asso- elation. Are Fighting Distributors It was forcibly brought to the at tention of the executive committee of the association at the Spokane meet ing held last Tuesday that certain shipping concerns handling fruit on the consignment basis for profit in the Northwest are making almost super human efforts to discourage the pur poses of the North Pacific Distribu tors' Association and to continue the demoralizing efforts of the auction and consignment plans that existed so uni versally during the past season, and a strong effort is being made to pre vent the co-operative efforts of the Northwest fruit districts as planned by the distributors association. How ever, the growers of the Northwest are so thoroughly conversant with the efforts that such organisations pursu ed and the ruinous effect they had upon the market and returns to the growers that their disgust has led them to heartily co-operate with the North Pacific Distributors' Association." Hood River has left the entire ar rangements of doing business with rhe distributors' association with the board of directors of the local fruit as sociation. It has been learned that the majority of the board of directors of the local association are in favor of the larger co-operative effort pro posed by the distribu-ors' association. However, Hood River will not Join the association unless the other larg er districts will unite in the co-operative movement. Certainly looks like discrimination. A social worker.Mrs. Charlotte Smith, says Bhe has bought babies in Bos ton for from $2 to $10, depending on whetlter they were blonde or bru nette. Poodle dogs in the fashionable district bring from $100 to $1000. And that in cultured Boston. NEEDFUL NOTIONS Make a list before jnu start out, but you won't have to look around. WHITE SALMON SHIPPINGJN COWS A car containing 25 thoroughbred llolstein cattle Is now iu transit from Klgin, 111., to White Salmon, consign ed to Charles R. Spencer, president of the First National Bank. Mr. Spen cer purchased the animals in Illinois for distribution among the farmers in that section. It is his plan to sell the cows at actual cost to responsible farmers who have feed, and to allow them practically their own time In which to pay for the animal. Several of the cows will be fresh soon, and each cow will give five gallons of milk each day. Mr. Spencer will give each purchaser every advantage pos sible and aid him in any manner with in reason. The dairying industry, to which a large portion of the country tributary to White Salmon i3 particularly well adapted, has always paid well when properly handled. The creamery at Trout Lake, which has been in opera tion for several years Is a well paying proposition, and the one recently started at Camas Prairie promises to be equally successful. Mr. Spencer has observed that the dairy cow is one of the surest sources of revenue on a farm, and that there is always more ready money in a dairy community, and after consider able thought upon the matter has generously placed before the farmer an opportunity to obtain good dairy stock upon exceptionally easy terms.
