The contract calls j for Hassam pavement and the amount was $27,619. E. O. Hall of this city bid $30,792 and the Oregon Hassam Paving Company bid $35,156. Five bids were received on single course concrete pavement. They were from Jeffrey & Button, D. A. Williams, E. I. Cantine, E. O. Hall and the Re- liance Construction Comply. The last-named company bid $23,374 on concrete as against $27,619 for Has- I sm. In view of the decided superior- lty of the Hassam, however, the bid on it w as accepted. OBITUARY George Albert Howell Friends of George Albert Howell were shocked this week when they learned that he had died very sudden ly about five o'clock Sunday after- noon at his home on the Tucker past several months but nothing ser- lous was anticipated. About an hour before his death he complained of not feeling wel. The pain settled in his chest and became acute. A doctor wag called and soon afterwards Mr. Howell became uconscious, sinking rapidly until death came. The funeral was held yesterday from the home, Mr. Howell was .born in Pawpaw, 1 HI. He would have passed his 66th birthday on the 26th of this month. He left Illinois and went to Frankfort Kansas, when ne was 21. He was married there in 1884 to Miss Mary Kluckner. In 1894 they moved to Im- bier, a small town located near La Grande, Oregon. Two years later they came to Hood River. They pur chased the place on Tucker Road where they have since made their home. Mr. Howell is survived, be sides his wife, by 11 children, six sons and five daughters, all of whom were here for the funeral.
