THE HUMAN DRUG STORE.
There Is a man you likely know.
Ills name Is Mr. Dope,
lie has so many ailments
That you'd think there was no hop.
His liver and his kidneys
And ills stomach and his heart
He thinks are so diseased
That tliey soon will fall apart.
It's a cancer; It's a tumor;
Oh. It mutt be Iirlght's disease!
Sure, It's tuberculosis
Every time he has to sneeze.
His appendix maybe that's It;
Apoplexy It's a-coming.
80 he runs oft to the drug store.
Keeps the doctor's phone a-hummln
Morning, he takes digitalis;
Noon, a dose of calomel;
Then at night some castor oil.
Aconite and nu and bell.
Goodness, what an awful dope fiend.
Human drug store walkin' round!
Stomach muct be perforated.
Wonder that he's above ground.
Cut It, Dope! Go gut a wood saw,
Lay some hickory on the buck.
Make that saw go like blue blazes
And you'll have much better luck.
Throw that dope on to the Junk pile,
Ph... ttu.fiv vnn, vlainna A mar
Eat plain grub and breathe pure ozone
And abjure nignoani ana Deer.

THE DROPPING BOARD ESSEN
TIAL.
For the sake of sanitation and the
saving of labor and valuable hen fer
tilizer the dropping board under the
roost Is a necessity to every well reg
ulated henhouse.
It's only where John Bughouse la on
the Job that hen manure Is allowed to
pile up on the floor and hens roost
over the festering mass. There It rots,
freezes and thaws, poisons the air and
affords breeding place for vermin and
mlerolies. The hens walk in It, lay in
It. dust in it, drag It here and there.
scratch It out over the floor. It la
rhoto by C. M. Uarnits.
DKOITINO BOARD, BOOST, NESTS
mixed with their feed. The result la
disease among the flock, and the valu
able fertilizer is wasted.
Such a filthy place is unpleasant for
those who attend the flock and unfit to
produce sweet eggs and pure meat.
The dropping board under the roost
is ho easily constructed that little time
and skill are required. It occupies only
the lloor room required for the propa
and may be so arranged as to be quick
ly removed. Thus the droppings may
be easily and quickly scraped oil and
stored and land plaster or dry earth
be thrown on the boards to absorb all
moisture and kill all bad smells.
DON'TS.
Don't envy others. The same people
may 1h envying your soft snap. If
you're content to do your best, kind
providence will do the rest and you
and yours will be well blessed.
Don't use an old slat conic rib, the
rat pantry and fat heu confectionery.
Don't let fruit rot under the tree
that hogs and chickens will thrive on.
Don't paint a galvanized roof until
the weather makes it rough enough to
hold the paint.
Don't fall to sow a crop In that poul
try yard where the ground'a foul. Win
ter rye for winter picking.
Don't bury the hatchet In that roost
ers head, use n gooo; sticking knire
and bleed him right.
Don't expect to make extra gains un
less yon take extrn pains.
Don't go back to the soli with the
idea that agriculture Is a snap and the
same as It was fifty years ago. Such
a hallucination spells ruination.
Don't preach conservation of our nat
ural resources and allow your Jaw
power to run to waste.
Don t consider building a rooster the
same as building a box. Some block
heads do that Mud fall flat.
Don't guy the preacher because h
dote on chicken. Kemember he Is a
prime poultry promoter and makes a
market for your tough antediluvians.
Don't get crazy over silver cups. It'a
nlv ! win n prize or so, and silver
cup have a pretty glow, but It'e mon
ey makes the fast mare gc.

A wheatneld seems not pretty as a gar
den Where flowers sweetest' fragrance round
us spread.
But If our harvests were - failure
We couldn't make flower' Into bread.
Red clover seems not glorious as the rose
bud
That decorates milady's golden head.
But rosea wouldn't do to feed old Bossy
To make good milk and butter for our
bread.
A aheep seems not so nice as that pet

That has a maid to bathe htm every day.
But folks would hardly butcher dogs for
mutton
Nor wear dog hair to keep the cold

That black coal doesn't sparkle like the

That dazzle so they almost take your

But if we bad to heat ourselves with dia

We'd surely In a short time freeze to
death.
The farmer doesn't strut like that soft

Who swings up Broadway like a home

But if for bread we looked to that fool

We'd soon be starved to death beneath

But don't forget the useful is the best.
Don't fool like butterflies among the flow

But, like the bee, bear honey from the

C. M. BARNITZ
KURIOS FROM KORRESPON DENTS
Q. lias a soil which contains much
iron any effect on fowls, and In what
manner? A. The Iron has about the
same effect on a fowl'a constitution aa
on man's. It Increases vigor, but at
the same time a (facta the plumage,
making white and white markings
brassy and even light red, while it In
tensifies the color of black, red and
buCf birds.
Q. Every winter my birds get a
swelling of the bead and eyes, and
nearly always some of them lose an
eye through this alckness. What is this
disease? A. Roup. Clean out nostrils
and cleft of mouth with feather dipped
In coal oil, and spray fowl'a mouth,
bead and eyea with following mixture:
Boraclc acid, one-quarter ounce; sine
sulphate, one dram; warm water, one
pint. Keep fowl in dry, clean place
free from drafts.
Q. Do you consider a dry season, like
we have had In the east, good turkey
weather? A. Drought is not good fot
turkey raising, because the Insects,
worms and vegetation from which
ranging turkeys get their building
food mostly die off. Normal weather
is beet.
Q. Please give me a reliable dip for
lice on fowls. A. We advice no one to
dip fowls for lice. It is difficult to soak
the liquid to the skin, makes the flock
look bum and rs seldom effectual, but
nearly always detrimental. Use Per
slan Insect powder on your chlcka and
poults, and make up the following for
the older birds: One pint gasoline, one
half pint crude carbolic acid, four
pounds plaster of parls. Mix the gaso
line and acid, pour Into plaster and mix
thoroughly. Then screen through a fly
screen on to a newspaper and let stand
for two hours. Place in air tight can
and dust into fowls' feathers to skin.
We have kept this powder two years
without loss of strength.
FEATHERS AND EGGSHELLS.
Just as soon as her poults are large
enough Mother Turkey is Inclined to
take to the trees at night This is
wild turkey Instinct. It means pro
tection from the fox and skunk, clean
sleeping quarters and plenty of pure
fresh air, so necessary for growth and
hardiness.
Some persons are good at raising
poultry, but have little business tact
when It comes to buying feed and sell
ing their product This accounts for
many failures, and the oaly salvation
for a man in such a predicament is te
marry a woman who can manage the
concern, and many do.
Wild turkey eggs are very fertile and
hatch well In Incubators. David Kehm
of Cedarvllle, Pa., placed fifty six In
an Incubator, and flfty-slx poults were
hatched. Wild turkey poults must be
watched closely. They inherit the love
of the wild and elope when least ex
pected. When Miss Caroline McGlll arose to
lecture on woman suffrage at the Be
lolt (O.) poultry and pet stock show
the ganders hissed aud, the geese cack
led so lond that the lecturer could not
proceed until the rubbernecks were
ejected.
In the poultry business it is the sur
vival of the fittest, as In everything
else. A plant can't succeed where the
foundation st-uk Is inferior, and no
fellow can u eft I who, lacking brains,
grit and gumption, has made a fizzle of
everything else.
The poultrymnn should carry insur
ance on his stock, buildings and equip
ment. At a fire at Charlottesville, Va.,
there was not a cent of Insurance on
S,00 pigeons and 200 bushels of wheat
that were destroyed.
Warm drinking water is an emetic
for humans, and. of course, not fit to
drink. Warm water for fowls in wln-
er and summer Is unnatural and not
relished and especially In summer
causes Indigestion. Keep the water
shaded, cool and clean and cut out corn
In the hot season to prevent trouble.
TulM'tvulosIa starts often In flocks at
the molting season, when feather form-
ng become a drain on a fowl's vltall-
y where It has not teen built up by
nutritious food, lie fore and during
molt fowls should le fed plenty of
protein and In molt should he protect
ed from rain.
RECORDS SHOW NO
FROST DANGER HERE
California orange growers' recent
disastrous experience with a killing
frost lend additional Interest to the
conclusion Just reached by Professor
Lawrence, based on records for the
past 20 years, that frostfighting will
never become general In the Hood
River Valley.
I he Hood River apple grower to
day would hardly recognize a smudge
pot If he saw one, their use here not
being esteemed necessary. In only
one orchard In the entire valley are
heaters used and this Is a pear orch
ard of which the owner is particularly
choice.
In studying weather conditions here
for the past 20 years, Professor Law
rence has found complete records and
states that during this entire time
there have been less than a dozen oc
casions when the temperature was suf
ficiently low during the blossoming
period to kill the blossoms or Injure
the fruit
"In order to further facilitate the
investigation which we are now mak
ing Into local weather conditions,"said
Professor Lawrence, "We have Just se
cured two wind vanes ,two recording
thermometers and five sling psychrom
eters. This equipment is in addition to
the 10 sets of minimum and maximum
self-recording thermometers, 10 rain
guages and recording barograph
which have been in use during the
past season.
"This additional apparatus makes it
possible to take more complete obser
vations and to secure data which will
be of great value to this section in
case conditions become such that frost
fighting is necessary.
"I am now compiling all the avail
able weather data for the past 20
years in order to show past weather
conditions as far as one is able to do."
During the past year Professor Law
rence has been assisted in makine
weather observations by a corps of ob-
ervers who were supplied with appar
atus which was established at 10 dif
ferent places scattered about the val
ley. SMALLPOX CHECKED
OVER IN UNDERWOOD
Underwood.Wash. Smallpox, which
broke out recently among some of the
laborers at the dam, has now been
stamped out, so physicians who have
been in charge here assert. A few-
days ago a case was found in Camp B.
The man had lived in a separate house
with his partner, however, so there
was little chance of the disease spread
ing. They are now so far recovered
that the house has been fumigated
and the quarantine raised. Another
case was found at Camp 2. Two cases
were sent across to Hood River before
it was known that it was smallpox
and these patients are now recovering
in the pest house provided by Hood
River for these prticular patients.
Last week all persons residing in
Underwood were vaccinated.
Regular Sunday excursion to Park
dale. Pleasant trip for yourself and
friends.
