GREATLYJNJOYED
One of tho most onjoyabli? affairs
of tho season was held Saturday even

Cards, dancing and billiards were
the entertainments of tho evening.
The affair was one of tho must enjoy

and was attended by students of the
state schools as well as by young peo

The patrons and patronesses of tho

'Mr. and Mrs. K. A. Franz.
Tho local and regular O. A. C. stu

an annual event. The O. A. C. has a
greater following of students than ever
this y ar, there being twenty-five Btu-
dents at the college from Hood River,
At the beginning of the short course
in February there will be more than
double that number. The short course
now- Includes everything from domes
tic science to a commercial course and
is being taken advantage of by hun

American Women Consider
Children a Great "Respon
sibility" to Be Shunned
By Dr. LLORENTE, Physician to the Royal family of Spiln
ACE suicide in America is largely influenced by an apparent
Ihi Ic of religious feeling. In Spain the average family num
bers seven and eight children.
THE WOMEN OF SPAIN REGARD CHILDREN AS A
JOY AND MOTHERHOOD AS A HAPPY GOD GIVEN DUTY. THE
AMERICAN WOMEN APPEAR TO DISPASSIONATELY REGARD CHIL
DREN AS GREAT RESPONSIBILITIES TO BE SHUNNED.
. x
The American woman puts off "these responsibilities" until it is
too late; then she leads a lonely and MISERABLE OLD AGE. 1
think this very fact makes for a great deal of social unrest and family
misery here.
The same noticeable lack of religious feeling is also noticeable
among a large class of women of Paris. They have SCOKNED
MOTHERHOOD. They are crying for greater social liberty. They
want to be free and independent to follow their individual desires,
much like the rich and leisure class here. Thev have numerous
ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE THE HOME which 'engage their timr
and interest, and they SHUN THE RESPONSIBILITY which
they feel that childhood brings.

Boys Are "Softened"
By Dr. GEORGE KIRSCHENSTEINER. German Educator
HMERICAN PUPILS, PARTICULARLY BOYS, ARE BEING SUB
JECTED TO HARMFUL "SOFTENING" PROCESSES.
The cause lies partly in the employment of methods
which make the pupils' tasks too easy and partly in the lack
of men teacjicrs.
Boys in the four lower grades may well be left in the hands of
women teachers. Tlio upper grades should unquestionably be
UNDER MKN who understand the nature of the boy better than
women do.
The boy should in many cases bo much more FIRMLY AND
VIGOROUSLY HANDLED than is possible for a womai. It
doubtless the overfilling of the school with women tenchers thnt i
EFFKMIMZINO the process of character building and weakening
the pupil' respects for authority.
