EL Lawrae,) The pear leaf blUter mite In a nil aute spider that due not excwd 1-100 of an tuch In length and often tlinee la barely one-half thin length UeliiK ao abort and alao rery alender they are only vUlble under a good magnifying glaaa. The work of thta peat la well known, however, by the greenlab, pimple-like elevattona Induced In the young leaves, which, on enlarging, become red, brown and Anally aim out black. When abundunt and clone together theae malformatlona, which are common ly termed guild, may coalesce, form tug corky and more or leas brittle patcbea which, If located near the marglna of the leaf, may split open Badly Infested leaves lose their functions and drop. II la not un common to And treea with portions of the young growth partially de foliated. The mite alao attacks the young fruit, but only temporary and alight injury la done, usually around the blossom end. The blister mite hibernates In the buda during the winter. As the bud scales and buda begin to grow, the mite feed at the base of the scales until the blade of the young leaf un folds, at which time they migrate to the leaf, Into which they dig amall round holes, thus gaining an en trance Into the leaf, where they feed upon the tissues. The Irritation causes the galls, which are the sum mer quarters of the peat. The en trance to the summer quarters may be aeen by examining the galls on the finder aide of the leaf with s good pocket lens. As soon oa the mites are mature, eggs are laid within the galls. The eggs hatch In about one week. As the family Increases In size, some of them leave their old feeding ground, crawl upward on the stem until they come In coutrct with a tender leaf, then dig Into the leaf, forming a new gall. If conditions are favorable, re production aud migration take place at such a rate that all the new leaf growth during the season becomes Blled with the galls. With the cloae of the season, when the leaves begin to drop off, alt the mites leave their quarters, passing down to the buds, Into which they force an entrance and in which location they byber nate during the winter. Since the mites migrate from the buda to the leaves during the spring and from the leaves to the buda dur Ing the fall they are expoaed for a time during each of the migratory periods. The exposure la greatest during the fall. In case of serious It. testation spraying should be done both .fall and aprlug. Ia case only one application Is made the work should le done In autumn about the time to the foliage has dropped. At this time the niltes are working among the hairs on the stems and buds attempting to And their way Into winter quarters. Spring spray ing la effective if done at the time the bud scales have opened enough so that the young leaves are Just begin ning to show their tips. It Is very evident tnat It Is more difficult to reach the pest at this time since they are more or lesa protected. Iu mak Ing the application all Infested branches should Im thoroughly drenched. The remainder of the tree need not be sprayed. Lime-sulphur of winter strength or lilack Leaf 40 (1 1000) with 2 pounda of soap to each 00 gallons of the tobacco solu tlon may be used. It must lie borne In mind In doing the spraying that these spiders are extremely minute and that they are more or lesa pro tected, making It necessary to spray with high pressure so that the spray Is driven In all crevices and comes In contact with the spider since the spray only kills by coming In contact with the pest. FORMER DUFUR WOMAN KILLS SELF IN 'FRISCO Attracted by the frantic screams of Miss Ollle Smith, who, after eating a handful of poison, stood In an open window on the third floor of n San Francisco hotel and shrieked for help, Patrolmen Iterg and Mullen rushed Into the building and found the woman writhing In pnln. Standing beside her in hysterics the policemen found a brother offl cee, Kdgar C. Uluxom, who told them that he had seen her take the poison and that he had unsuccesH fully tried to knock the powder from her hand. Ten minutes after the officers en tered the room the woman was placed In the Central Emergency Hospital ambulance, but she died before the hospital was reached. An investigation by the police re vealed that the woman came to San Krnnclscn about six years ago from Dufur, Or., where her father lives. Jnyne, Hood lUver, Ore. 3fi tfc WOMEN LAUD WEST'S PRISON POLICIES Governor West's prison policy, which has been of particular Inter eat to Hood River on account of the convict camp at Shell Rock, Is pralaed by the Oregon suffragists In their newspaper as follows: The state of Oregon has a hero for a governor. Too youthful to Ik; president and too small to lie u po liceman, Oswald West landed In the gubernatorial chair of hla native state, surprising himself as well as those who voted for him, and has kept on surprising everybody ever since. His exploits have already given him a magazine fame throughout the world, bnt the Journalists can't keep up with his red hot record for doing things. Ills honor system for the state penitentiary has proven a successful experiment In spite of the fears of hla friends and the malicious prophecies of bis foes. Gangs of con victs have been put to building roads in different sections of the country, on honor and without a guard; and, with very few excep tions, bis trust In them has not been betrayed. They earn wages, part of which la put to their credit for the support of their families and the rest goes to the state. The expense of running the prison has beeu reduced about half.
