FISH, Secretar Trcmiams 1500. 00 Haccs $3000. 00 FIRE BLIGHT IS ERADICATED HERE Professor Lawrence announces that H re blight, the moot destructive of nil diseases ot the orchard, has ap parently lieen eradicated from the valley. This has becu done through the co-oera tlon of all orchard owu ers and the fruit Innpector urges that this co-operation le continued In or der that a recur ranee of the Infection may lie prevented. Commenting up on thin pest, Professor Lawrence says: "Fire blight Is caused by a bacter ium which Uvea lu the diseased tree during the winter. During the spring drops of gum exude from the diseased areas currylug countless uumtiers of the bacteria, Bees and other Insect a feed upon the gum aud their feet and mouthparts tiecouie covered with the organism. While collecting nee- tar In fruit blossoms, bacteria are thus deposited In the nectar In which they thrive and multiply. These bacteria work their way dowuward Into the fruit spurs, limbs, larger branches, trunks, roots, progressing until the tree Is dead unless stopped by the removal of thelufested portion by pruiilug, after which nil pruned surfaces have leeii saturated with corrosive sublimate, the work of sterilizing the tools and surfaces be ing done as the surgery work on the tree progresses. "Fire blight, pear Might or pome blight Is the most destructive of all diseases of the pome fruits. It Is par ticularly Injurious to the quince, has practically terminated the pear In dustry la many of the pear growing sections not only throughout the West, but over the entire country, and has become the disease of great est concern to growers of the apple. "During 1010 for the first time fire blight made Its appearance in the Hood Kiver valley and spread over an urea of more thau ItOOO acres. The fact that this dlseuse did spread over so large an urea has puzzled many w ho are not familiar with the action of bacteria and the progress of dis ease caused by them. Bac'erla are minute plants measuring about 1 10000 to 1 20000 of an Inch In length. The minuteness of these orgaulsms cannot be appreciated. They occur every where and oftentimes In great abundance. The New York Kxperi ment Station found till-', 54.'! (averuge of twelve tests) In one cubic centl meter (about 1 1000 of a quart) of milk drawn w ith a milking machine, Soils of ordinary fertility and la good tilth contain 1,000,000 to 5,000.000 bac teria lu each gram (about 2s grams In each ounce). "Tiider Ideal conditions a bacter ium of the shape of the one causing tire blight will elongate and divide, forming two Individuals In twenty to thirty minutes and these will In turn divide Into four, then eight. In creasing In this manner ami rate a single bacterium Is capable cf pro ducing 1,000,000 progeny lu less than 7 hours. At this rate more than "o, 000.000 would mature In less than 12 hours. I'ncliecked It would only take a few duys for t he ulr, water, and eartli to lie completely occupied with them. "When It Is remeiiilsred that fire blight Is caused by such an organism It Is easily understood why epidemics occur and why thousands of Infec tions may occur In a single tree and why entire orchards are completely eradicated In a single season. "Fortunately the location of areas in which the bacteria occur lu fruit trees are very conspicuous on the smooth portions of the tree as more or less Irregularly shaped black and shrunken areas extending along the sides of the limits or even girdling the branches or trunk of the tree. These areas are hold over cankers and ni 1 1 -1 be cut out as soon ns de tected Kvery cut surface must be treated wllli a solution of corrosive sublimate not weaker than 1 part of the poison to b)00 parts of water. The pruning tools must ulso be dis infected frequently as the work pro gresses. Should the hlluht make Its ap pearance at any time during the year It should Is? removed at once and with M II the nhove mentioned pre cautions Fire blight has apparently leen eradicated In tbl valley. There Is danger, however, that some cases have beeti overlooked. Kvery one should lie more than cautious to ol nerve all abnormal conditions and reportthesmiieatoc.ee to the fruit Inspector. Since tbla valley la natur ally favored by barriers on all sides the Introduction and rapid spread of disease at many places at one time which might lie Introduced from neighboring sections give us little concern. Our greatest concern la therefore to eradicate the pests al ready established, lly close co-oper-atlou ot all such results may U- accomplished."
