CANADIAN AND ENGLISH FRUIT PROSPECTS GOOD The fruit crop report of the Cana dian department of agriculture, Just Issued, shows that, on the whole, apples nre doing remarkably well. Little bud and twig killing have been reported and the prospects are favorable for a good crop. The report Is confined almost ex clusively to conditions under which the trees and plantations have come through the winter, deter mined partly by the summer and autuuin conditions of lull, and part ly bv the winter and spring weather of the present year. Fruit prospects all over Great Brit ain and Ireland are, on the whole, favorable. The winter was not se vere. CONVICTS NEAR SALEM LAY FINE MACADAM ROAD Work on the Salem end of the I'a cllic Highway, which, when com pleted, will connect the state capltul with Portland by a line macadam road, has lieen progressing satis factorily this spring, under the per sonal supervision of George Itogers, memlicr of the state highway com mission appointed by Governor West. Several miles of road, begin ning nt the edge of Salem, have been completed. "This work has been done by con victs," said Governor West. "We made arrangements for securing a rock crusher aud, under supervision of Mr. Rogers, convicts have put down as fine macadam road as can be found anywhere. We are ready to proceed just as fast as districts provide for the expense." The highway Is on the east side of the river and will be part of the pro posed loop from Portland to Salem, the Pacific Highway Is-lng on the east side of the capital road on the west side.
