12 THE HOOD RIVER NEWS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3. 1912 II I J I I , 1 1 I PVJB)EB Absolutely Pure Economizes Butter, Flour, Eggs ; makes the food more appetizing and wholesome The only Baking from Royal Grape MR, FRIDAY WRITES OF JIS POLICIES Editor, the News- On account of my views favorable to the con struction of a water grade road out of town up Hood River, some people take exception to me as a candidate for county commission er. In regard to this I want to say that if I am county commis sioner and a petition is presented for granting this road, and if there is no remonstrance, I will vote in favor of granting the pe tition. But if there is a remon strance against the petition great er than the petition, I will of course have to vote against granting the petition. In this connection I want to also say that a man in Portland recently wanted me to ship" him 14 boxes of apples. The road to town was too muddy to take them that way. so I started with them to Mohr's Station and before 1 got to that place I had to lighten my load by taking off five boxes on account of the mud, The road that day was a fair sample of all the roads in Hood River county for the same distance, Shortly after that I was attend ing a stockholders' meeting of the East Fork Irrigating Com pany to devise ways and means for paying the interest on its bonded indebtedness and for run ning expenses. I understand that the other irrigating ditch companies are in the same trouble mortgaged to the limit. I am ashamed to put it in print. Our taxes are mounting higher and higher, and I do not object to being taxed for public improve ments. But I do object to hav ing any of my taxes applied on an automobile road along the Columbia River from Hood River to Portland till after our own roads are in good shape and un til we can pay our taxes without borrowing the money, and until we have a few more of the ne cessities and possibly a few lux uries at home. Those who want to oppose me on this account had better drop me and seek out some other per son to carry out their wishes. If any one wants to donate his priv ate money to be used on this road or if the people in the road dis tricts through which this road runs want their money used on this road, well and good, but that would be another matter.
