Apple Blossom Week Much might be said in favor of observing the season of apple blossoms. Ferhaps something might In? said against it. but as yet it has not been and it is hard to find any objection to an event which should not only foster local pride but would also furnish an opportunity to hundreds of non-residents to see the Hood River Valley at a season when it is a veritable Faradise. In other cities festivals of this kind have proven most success ful and it has given an opportu nity to make known in the most convincing manner possible the attractiveness of the section. In Hood River, with Fortland ready to send hundreds of guests, the success of such an undertaking can hardly be doubted. It would further serve to establish be tween Portland and Hood River a bond which will become still stronger when the proposed road is finished and when the tide of tourist travel is turned this way. The project is one which will appeal to all loyal citizens of Hood River county, and one, like wise, from which they should all reap a benefit It is only neces sary to get the machinery start ed and, if the proper arrange ments for entertaining guests are made, success will be assured. California men have taken a back seat in political affairs since the women have been granted suffrage. At present the indica tions are that there will be hair pulling before the campaign is over, reminine forces are about evenly divided and each contin- j gent thinks its champion Tafti or Roosevelt is "just lovely." President Lovett returns East l as the bearer of good tidings' from the West The general im provement in business, of which he tells, will spread eastward un til it covers the whole country. Prosperity is as infectious as de pression, and it cannot but in spire courage for new ventures among the timid. Oregonian. Judging from the attention at tracted by the arrival of a small herd of elk in the state the last of the week, it can only be sur mised what a rumpus will accom pany the arrival in July of the thousands of Elks who will swarm to Oregon from all points of the compass for the Grand Lodge reunion in Portland. Senator Bourne is evidently going to conduct a gumshoe cam paign, if any. The tide of pub lie opinion appears to be turning strongly against him and at pres ent Ben Selling of Portland is getting strong support. Selling is conducting a vigorous publicity campaign. Whatever may be the policies of the President-to-be, Hood Riv er's prosperity after the market ing of the big apple crop this Fall, barring unforeseen circum stances, will be assured. Even a high tariff can't stop it. If Governor West's convicts make good at Shell Rock this summer, Hood River may be able to borrow some to help harvest that bumper apple crop in the fall. The attention of those who in sist that times are growing worse is called to the fact that fifty years ago the ice was just break ing up on the Columbia. Babies who disapprove of os culatory attentions must be on their guard after April 19. The ojien season for ioliticians will then be on. Local fruitgrowers are now all busily engaged "at the front," armed with the spray pump. INTEREST TAKEN PLEASES BENSON That S.
