SIX ARE IN RACE
FOR COMMISSIONER
Six aspirants are now In the race
for the nomination as county com
missioner. The majority of these are
from the Upper Valley and as a re
sult support from that section will
lie divided. The candidates Include
George M. Wlshart, J. K. I'utman.
W. II. Kodenhlser and W. II. Marsh
all. Two candldat.s are now out
from the lower valley, both ranchers
In the fine Grove district. They are
F. I'. Friday and I). F. Thorne. The
latter made his announcement last
week. O H. Khoades, the prewnt
commissioner whose term expires, "Is
also urged by his friends to become a
candidate to succeed himself, but he
has not as yet du-lded to run.

The meeting wan called to order
by W. E. Clark, and organized by
electing ('. E. Mcintosh, chairman,
and W. I.Cornell, secretary.
The following resolution was then
passed:
Kesolved: That It Is the sen' of
this meeting that out of the three
candidates now running for county
commissioner from the I'pper Valley,
one candidate be selected by the
meeting as the choice of the I'pper
Vulley atid that the other candidates
be requested to withdraw.

J. W. Morton thinks thirty-six
years' resilience In Oregon qualifica
tion enough to go to the U. S. sen
ate. This being so, my thirty-six
years' residence In the state should
qualify me for county commissioner.
Besides this, I know I could please
the people, as I lelleve In eight hours
work with ten hours tiny. As the
oflice Is a per diem job I would be on
It all the time.
I believe In good roads nnd oil new
work to start In front of every man's
property; a new court house, con
structed of rock from the lava In-ds
This will necessitate the fixing of the
road from U limns south for a couple
of miles to haul It over. "Experts"
know It takes different kinds of rock
for roads ami buildings, so a great
expense can be saved by the teams
hauling road material back from the
lower valley to fix the roads near
the lava beds.
I would suggest two cupolas for
the court house, In each a silver cur
few bell to le hung. These would
look pretty and give tone to the
building.
1 promise not to succeed myself for
more than three terms, unless I
change my mind, nor to appoint my
successor.
If you should see me talking to
Mr. Early I wish to give notice right
now there Is no understanding lie

riology at the Oregon Agricultural
College. The experiment station ex
perts have been luy preparing this
material for the Inoculation of soil
for some time, ami will send full di
rections for Its use with each culture.
Those desiring the material should
send their requests at least two
weeks In advance of the time they
wish to use It, stating w hat legumi
nous crops t hey desire to raise, and
how much land they Intend to plant.
Any one who has examined the
roots of a thrifty plant of this sort
of crop knows that there are found
on the roots small lumps, known as
nodules. Scientific study has shown
these to Ik caused by bacteria Infect
ing the roots, and that unless these
are present, a good stand will not be
obtained, showing that the bacteria
are necessary to the full growth of
the plant. If the soli does not con
tain the bacteria, a good catch of
the crop may not be expected. I!y
using these cultures the proper bac
teria may be Introduced Into the soli.
