II. Jensen, road supervisor In the Mt. Hood district, returned the last of the week from Southern California where he spent six weeks super in tending the planting of a walnut or chard. Mr. and Mrs. Ualph K. Laraway left last week for a vacation In Southern California. Mr. Laraway has worked for seven years at the bench with only tine month off. Marshall, entertained twelve of his friends at a birthday party Saturday. A Jolly afternoon was spent In playing games, ufter which a supper was served, ending with birthday cake surmounted by ten candles. The place cards were In the form of hatchets, upon each of which was Inscribed a' rouplet containing a guest s name. J. W. Morton of Salem, who Is a candidate for United States senator, was In the city for a short time Sat unlay morning. Mr. Morton out lines his platform as follows: Pro gressive Republican policies, parcels post, direct election of United States senators, government control of trusts, Income tax, commission to pass upon value of corporate stock. and exclusion of Asiatic coolie labor, Rapid ami satisfactory progress Is being made on the east side grade About thirty men have !een em ployed for a couple of weeks. The road has been reduced to grade and the fill on the other side completed, The point will be cut down and a re tabling wall built In order to widen the roadway at that point. The work, as'planned for the present, will tie completed In nttmit two more weeks. Mayor Wright and I)r. Uro bilin Inspected the work the last of the week and were much pleased. LeKoy Armstrong of this city has written a story which appears In the March number of the Sunset maga zine. The hero, Ishmael Isherwood, conceives the Idea of constructing the proposed highway from Lost Lake to the Sandy river In eastern Multnomah county. He finally suc ceeds In Interesting a rich woman In the enterprise. Mr. Armstrong Is an enthusiastic worker for this road and considers that If It W'ere In on eratlon Oregon would have a scenic highway that would attract tourists from all sections, An exceptionally clever nnd enter tabling program was given nt the Methodist church Friday evet.mg under the auspices of the IVIrbin class. The star performer of the evening was little Alice Taylor, who recited "The Persuasive Agent" so effectively that he responded to two encores. Starr, representing the San Francisco Examiner, who has been encouraging the poultry Industry In the valley for the past couple of months by giving away chickens to new subscribers, returned to Sau Francisco Monday. With the recent good' weather, members of the Hood Klver Baseball League have been practicing for the coming season. The team has elected the following olficers: Carl Kent, manager; William llaker, treasurer and secretary, and Frank Meyer, cap tain. No schedule of games has Ix-en worked out as yet. M. M. Hill.
