Had Business
Sjakinir of the increase of
business at the jxistotlice. due to
the approach of the holiday sea
son, Postmaster J. 1 Lucas i
quoted in last week's News as
follows:
"Most of the increase of busi
ness now is due to the fact that
many people are sending: away
to purchase their Christmas
presents. The biji mail order
houses of the East and Middle
West are receiving many orders
from this point."
Year in and year out the
home papers point out the mis
taken policy which leads people
to send their money away from
home to the big mail order con
cerns, but it seems as if their
arguments and pleadings are of
little avail.
Apparently, people are blind
to the evils of this practice. As
a matter of fact, purchasers can
usually do better at home, in the
long run, than they can with the
mail order houses. Time and
again incidents come to light
showing that the very articles
purchased from these outside
concerns could be obtained from
the local merchants at as reason
able a price as they can from
the outsiders. Disappointments,
however, and bitter lessons from
experience, seem to have no ef
fect on some people, and when
they get their fingers on a mail
order catalogue they can no more
resist the lure of the artfully
worded descriptions of cheap
merchandise than a fish can
jump out of a frying pan.
But even were it necessary to
pay slightly higher prices, loy
alty to the home city and that
larger selfishness that looks to
the ultimate result rather than
to the present saving of a few
shillings, should influence pur
chasers to keep their money here.
Hood River has as fine a show
ing of business buildings as can
be found in any western city of
its size. It has stores of which
any city, large or small, might
well be proud. Let the mail or
der patrons look over our busi
ness streets, and then in imagi
nation see what Hood River
would look like with half those
handsome business blocks va
cant, the dismantled show win
dows staring blank and empty
on sidewalks over which the dust
had accumulated undisturbed.
Not a nice picture, is it? Yet
every dollar sent away to the
mail order houses helps toward
such a result.
Another thought: tew people
like to make presents that look
"cheap," yet they will unblush
ingly give articles bearing the
stamp of a mail order house,
which shouts "cheapness" as
loud as it could be shouted
through a megaphone. One
would imagine people of refined
sensibilities would be ashamed
to give "mail order" gifts.
Again, it is well known that
Christmas presents often have
to li exchanged. Such ex
changes are easy when the arti
cles are procured from your local
dealer, but are impossible in the
case of mail order purchases.
Thus it would seem that there

jrifts, in addition to the stock ar

mail order trading. It is to be
lioiHii that Hood Kiver jeople
will think these txiints over care
fully, and then y It their home
merchants for their holiday

sporadic cttorts in this regard by
various communities do not get
the desired results. Mr. Martin
is of the opinion that represent
atives of the leading commercial
organizations should get together
regularly and decide on some
concerted action. The smaller
cities are interested in this, as
well as the larger, It applies to
agricultural communities, too,
for they should have industries
that would give employment to
many of their people during the
winter season, when the fields
are dormant.
Announcement of a new rail
road across Oregon from east to
west was appropriate news for
Thanksgiving week. President
Lovett of the Haniman system
has authorized the construction
of the Oregon eastern from Yale
to Dog Mountain, a distance of
140 miles. The road will not
stop there but will be built to
Burns, then presumably on to
Bend and very likely south to
connect with the Natron-Klam-ath
line. Work on the project
will be rushed and it is expected
to get the first link under way
before the end of the present
year. This new mileage will be
of great value to Eastern Oregon
a country now undergoing rapid
development, and will give mod
ern transportation to a district
now isolated.
