result of the municipal election.
Howe won by a single vote.
The total number of votes de
posited when the polls closed at
7 o'clock was 357, which is a
heavy vote considering that it
was only a city election with no
great issues at stake, and also in
view of the almost constant driz
zle of rain throughout the hours
the j)olls were open.
A large proportion of the vote
was cast late in the day. In fact
there had been but 150 votes cast
at 2 p. m., so that over 200 were
cast in the five hours from 2 to 7.
One of the peculiar phases of
the situation, created by the res
ignation of Mayor Hartwig, is
the fact that the new council will
not have the selection of his suc
cessor, with whom they will have
to work for the next year.
There is very little talk as yet
as to who may be selected for
mayor, but it is believed quite
probable that one of the retiring
councilmen may be selected for
the place by his fellow members.
Under the law, the present
council will have the choosing of
a successor to the retiring mayor.
The resignation has not yet been
accepted by the council, but un
doubtedly will be acted upon at
the next meeting of the city fath
ers, next Monday evening. As
the old council holds office until
the first Monday in January, it
will have the selection of a may
or for the unexpired term of
Mayor Hartwig, which lasts for
a year.
