Thin year we have had neither iir'iihU'h, mtimpH nor chicken pox; but we have an other dlneaMe not Hated by the state hoard of health. There are no ijuar antlne regulation) for It control. Whether It Is contajrlotiH or Infectious our medical friends will have to dt clde, hut any school teacher can swear thut It Is catching and that It spreads. It Is to 1h found In every school. Hood Ulver schools have a few cases, more than some schools, less than others. In varying degrees of Intensity It may be found In most of the grades. Including the high school. It seldom causes loss of at tendance at school, but It certainly unfits the sufferer for serious school work. Occasionally u severe case cuts a student's career short. The symptoms run the whole gamut from silly to tragic. A peculiarity of the disease Is the fact that It sel dom attacks a lone Individual. An other remarkable symptom Is the hallucination which leads two of the patients to suffer together. Most people can recognize the disease, even If they have never suffered Its effects, by the tired feeling that comes over them when they are compelled to witness the antics of the smitten. In the primary grades the disease Is largely Imitation or the result of suggestion. Flashes of the real thing are to be seen even here. In the cuse of the small boy and girl who altern ately enjoy the delectable sweetness of an "all-day sucker," or chew tire same wad of gum. Farther along come languishing glances, surreptl tlous notes, and an exchange of jew elry. These symptoms are either added to or subtracted from depend ing upon the sufferer, their environ ment, the amount, duration and kind of suggestions they have leen subjected to, their tendency to Imi tate or dramatize, the examples set before them and their Ideals. The other day an Intermediate grade boy stopped lu the Hue of march, struck a melodrnmlc pose borrowed from some moving picture "vnudevUlaln," smote his chest and addressed the lady of his choice thus: "I love you with my whole heart!" I reniemtsT once being n wakeued long after midnight by a tifteeu year old boy singing to tits lady love, on the steps across the way. Ills heart touching ditty was the chorus of "John lirown's Hod.v." After sing ing It once he sang It again, omitting the last word. Again and again he sang It, eliminating word after word A Basket of Goodness GUESS! !fr is a basket of our Fine Groceries. You see it. Why should I recite It? Aud, really, the question Is too serious for levity. There Is an Ideal companionship for boys and girls, such companion Mhi; Is rational and whoh -some; it Is general and healthful, not "at united with the mating Instinct. Too often the ti'uoceut friendships of childhood are utterly spoiled by the xllly mig gestlons of older brothers and sis ters, or of other people. l;ut the critical period In the life of any boy or girl Is the adolescenr, the time which Intervenes between childhood and actual manhood and woman hood, the time when character and the habits of life are forming. If ever a boy and a girl need a father's and a mothers complete confidence, wise counsel und firm guidance. It Is during these formative years. This Is a poor time for cheaply sentimen tal or wildly sensational reading, for associations that develop an un wholesome Imagination, for the free play of precocious Instlnets. Itojs and girls must be prepared to with stand temptations. Thin Is not ac complished by hot-house methods. High Ideals and good habits, the most Important of which Is a rigid self control, are most essential. Character, after all, Is the Important thing. Gr(Wii people thene days are Inclined to look with too niu h leni ence upon the lapses of youth. The constant excuse of youth for wong- dotngls: "I never thought," or "I just wanted to do It. 'I don't know- why. " Self-control and reflection lire more or less a habit; they are-not Inherent In the average eMId. You cannot free children from parental restraint and expect them to exerc ise self-control. They must be subjected ' to a more or less rigid discipline In ' the home and In the nrlinul until! right habits are formed und fixed;' then self control may gradually be allowed to take the place of parental control. There Is a growing lack of respect on the pirt of young people tew ard their elders, parents Included. Isn't It about time to resurrect some of the precepts of our fathers and' mothers? It may be too late for some boy or souie girl If we put It off much longer. Married at U. B.
