The words nud work of Christ Jesus are U'tter understood and thus Ufoine more potent In brln'ln a greater and more endur ing experience In good to every ear nest seeker. Inasmuch as Jesus declared that "it Is the Father that doeth the works." and also taught reliance upon spiritual rather than material means. It Is easily recognized that "the Father" means the Infinite Spirit or Divine Mind. The expres. slon of this Mind Is therefore divine and it was the presence of this truth In him that constituted the divinity of Christ Jesus. This the Christian Scientist believes In and therefore Is not to lie properly charged with re pudiating the divinity of Christ as you lnfnr. As to the circumstance of Jesus' birth Mrs. Eddy says on page "(I of Ifetrospectlou and Intro spection." " We do not Question the authenticity of the scriptural narra tlvc of the virgin mother and Bethle hem ItnlH', and the Messianic mission of Christ Jesus." Hie healing effect wrought In Chris tian Science is In no sense "to be as erilM-d to the rehabilitation of the will." It is rather a giving up of the human will to the divine. The text book of Christian Science, "Science aud Health With Key to the Scrip tures," says on page 42, "Christian Silence is the law of Truth, which heals the sick on the basis of the one Mind or ;od;" also page 4!t), "llu man will Is an animal propensity, not a faculty of Soul. Hence It can not govern man aright." As you say, the beneficlent influ ences of Christian Scieuce cannot lie denied. These Influences, however, cannot lie the effect of nny affiliation with Hiilrltuallstle methods In the (tense of methods employed by believ ers In Spiritualism. Yours truly, HowakmC. Van Mkti:r, Cornmltb-e on Publication for Oregon The Editor's Easy Snap Most anyone can be an editor. "A mischie vous lad of Piketown threw a stone and struck Mr. Pike In the alley last Tuesday." ''Chus. Fitzgerald, for 21 years Jailer at the asco county Jail, died at his home at The Palles Wednes day, aged 72 year. Hut few men were N'tter known In Wasco county than Old John Fitzgerald, as he was familiarly called. liurlng the long time he was In charge of the comity Jail, lie had In his keeping many noted criminals, Including Norman Williams, who was the last man hanged In Oregon outside the state prison walls The crime for which Williams paid the death penalty was commit ted in Hood Ulver Valley, having taken place In the Mt. Hood country. In all those years, and while dealing with desperate men, there were only two Jail breaks, although Wasco county's Jail is very Insecure, one of them lietng the time (Jeo. Kol bins, now serving a life sentence In the Or egon iH'iiltentlary at Salem for the murder of Mrs. Casto. knocked Fitz gerald down with a stick of firewood and escaped, but was soon afterward recaptured. In years Fitzgerald was not away from the court house more than an hour at any time. Fitzgerald was kind but linn with Ids prisoners, and seldom a man left his jail, either to go to the penitenti ary or to be set at liberty, who w as not his friend. Through his sound advice many a man, by pleading guilty, has gotten off with a lighter sentence than If he had not heeded the counsel of the kindly old Jailer aud stood trial. He was born In Philadelphia 72 years ago, and learned the trade of steamboat engineer. During the late Ws and early '7u's he was engi neer on different boats on the upper Columbia, but in ls7(J he gave up eteumboattng and located for a time at The Dalles, later going to San Francisco, then to Nevada, where for a time he was engaged In mining. He returned with his family to The Dalles in lSS'i, and in lS'JO was em ployed as Jailer by the county court. He leaves five children. Flizabeth, George, May and William, of The Dalles, and Mrs. A. I!. Harper, of Portland. His wife died a number of years ago. The Last Ciirl of Summer From the Chicago Poet 'Tis the last girl of summer Ix-ft swimming alone. All her lovely companions Have packed up and gone. No fair debutante. No heiress Is ulgb, To reflect back her shivers Or hear her sharp sigh. In her neat bathing costume She looks like a peuch Or she did at the moment She ran down the beach. She dove through the breakers And luughed with delight As on through the billows She swam with her might. No young men in liauuels Are there for a stroll. No lank summer lover To pledge heart and soul. The hotel piazzas Are empty and bare The lust girl of summer Is all there Is there. She comes from the water. Her bathing suit soaked The very same garment Of which oft we've Joked. She smiles In enjoyment: "Though summer Is past, I'll now go home happy I've been In at last:" Killed 400 Pound Bear A liear weighing 4M) pounds was shot bv I.. W. oods and Eugene aimer near the Mt. Adams orchards Sunday. It was a liear the ranchers had be'n nfter for the past two or three years, but liruln had always outwitted them. This Is the second bear this fall that these hunters have killed. White Salmon Enterprise. Vogt Estate Turned Over to Heirs The executors of the will of the late Maximilian Vogt filed their final re port In the county court Thursday and the estate Is now closed, the property having been turned over to the heirs, one of whom Is Joseph Vogt, of Hood Hlver. This Is one of the largest estates ever administered upon In Wnsco county, although the executors com Dieted their task In the shortest period of time the law permitted. Railroad Service to Bend October 22 Regular train service to Bend will be Inaugurated Sunday, OctoU-r J2, Chief Engineer Palph I'.iidd, of the Oregon Trunk, announced Thursday. The work of ballasting between Bend and Crooked Blver Is going ahead rapidly. A large force of men 1s now there to Is-gln construction of the roundhouse at once. The "Y" and necessary sidetracks are already luld. Organisms The following sayings have lieeti gleaned from the sermons of Evan geltst Organ, w ho Is now holding a great revival meeting at the Chris tlan church, and are submitted to News readers: Don't r lost, but boost. The law drives, the gospel draws. The crowded Inn crowds Jesus out. The greatest man is the most like (iod. We need pur religion as well lis pure food. You will never be forgotten If you forget yourself. There Is only one cure for drunken ness taste not. The sou of a good man may U ft child of the devil. OU'dlence and loyalty are the best proofs of true love. Small men are especially original In their Ingratitude. The devil's promises an' not worth while eveu If realized. "Any bottles, any rags?" 'es. If bottles there are rags! A light uuder n bushel will either go out or burn through. Christ's way Is the easy way; your own way Is the hard way. The best commentary on the Bible Is an earnest Christian life. We get most of our thorns In our attempt to pluck the roses. Jesus only and pure religion is the world's greatest need today. To 4loubt the being and power of Satan Is strong evidence of both. The strongest proof of the existence of the devil Is his tracks In the world. Be anxious for souls but not lm patient. Be patient but not Indif ferent. To be In the world is alright, but to have the world In you Is all wrong. There nre many "big bugs" who are simply "bed bugs" on Sunday mornings.
