Christian Science
That a deep interest in Chris
tian Science is felt locally was
made manifest Tuesday nijrht
when a large and intelligent au
dience assembled to hear its te
nets discussed by Mr. Frank H.
Leonard, one of its ablest advo
cates. Mr. Leonard's address
was without venom for other
faiths, enliehteniner. and no
doubt did much toward destoy-
ing prejudice and misconception
in regard to this widespread and
growing religious movement
To those who have studied it, its
growth is remarkable and its in
fluence in the religious world a
factor universally recognized.
Speaking in a comparative
sense, Christian Science is not,
however, a new idea, thought or
movement except, perhaps, in its
application and the combining
of the teachings of Christ and
the Bible with the conclusions of
the oldest philosophers and es
tablishing a propaganda so simple
that it can be grasped by the lay
mind. To those who can repu
diate the divinity of Christ, and
then accept his teachings from a
mental and perhaps spiritual,
rather than a physical or mortal
point of view, this faith no doubt
affords a haven of religious peace
and strength, Its healing pow
ers, however, must be ascribed
to the rehabilitation of the will
in those who are spiritually, men
tally and physically weak in
other words, an ascendancy of
mind over matter, a principle al
most as old as the hills, and so
admitted by all great thinkers.
As a combination, therefore, of
the spiritualistic and metaphysi
cal, this latest of America's wide
spread religious movements pre
sents an interesting study, while
its beneficent influences cannot
be denied. The outcome of a
growing disbelief, by many, in
foreordi nation, a hell of fire and
brimstone, and the divine birth
of Christ, it has come as an anch
or to those seeking new religious
consolation. To physical suffer
ing superinduced by what may
be termed a diseased mentality,
it has also brought rehabilitation
and relief. To those who can
embrace a religion stripped of its
outward forms of worship, of its
traditions, of its mysticisms and
time-honored customs, Christian
Science makes a strong appeal.
In the religious world, as its elo
quent advocate stated, it can
aptly be termed a business re
ligion. Clark and the Presidency
A widespread publicity cam
paign, now being made, no longer
leaves doubt as to the aspira
tion of Champbeau Clark, or
"Champ," as he is familiarly
called, to influence public opin
ion in favor of his nomination as
the Democratic candidate for
President. Naturally the South
ern press is for Clark, and the
Anderson, South Carolina, Mail
says:
"Signs have been multiplying
for some time that Wilson is los
ing ground. The Mail predicted
weeks ago that Clark would be
come stronger the more the peo
ple study the situation, Clark is
the logical man for the nomina
nation and this is being more
generally recognized every day.
And he is going to be nomi
nated." Taking the opposite view, we
believe the more the people study
the situation the less likely is
Clark to be nominated, and less,
yet, likely to be elected in case
he is nominated. Clark's part in
the Canadian reciprocity legisla
tion has placed him in the equiv
ocal Haition of a statesman
whose views cannot le taken se
riously, although witty and bril
liant. That Wilson is losing
ground maybe true. He is not,
however. Clark's only antago
nist, for looming big on the polit
ical horizon is Ohio's mighty citi
zen, Judson B. Harmon.
Harriman Change of Policy
A general reorganization of
the Harriman railroad lines on
the Coast will, for the first time.
give the Northwest an executive
head whose decision will be final,
and who will be in close touch
with its needs and interests.
Hampered by having to submit
matters even of trivial weight to
officers who resided in the East,
and whose interest must of ne
cessity have been more occupied
by things close at hand, the op
erating of the Harriman and
other allied lines in Oregon has
been unwieldy and more or less
ineffective, By selecting a man
who has spent years on the
Coast, who has risen from the
ground up in railroading, and
whose directing hand will be
from the metropolis of Oregon's
interests, much can be hoped for
in better and more intelligent
administration. The time has
passed for ignoring Oregon's
claims to progressive railroad
administration. Its needs can
be no longer neglected, and the
natural sequence is an executive
head on the ground, who can act
wisely and promptly, irrespect
ive of red tape and higher-ups.
The Dago and Turk
While war between England
and Germany was contemplated
with grave apprehension by the
world powers, they are concern
ing themselves but little over
bloodshed between the Turk and
Italian. Having nothing to lose,
the powers are keeping their
hands off. To the public, a
struggle between the Dago and
the Turk has much the elemehts !
of an impromptu dog fight, in '
which the land of the fez has but
few sympathizers. Spoiling for!
the need of a trouncing for some
time, Italy can perhaps do the
job with less interference than
any other nation.
