OLD OCEAN'S TIDE
MAROONS LOCAL MAN
Since the return of the Hood Kiver
colony from Cannon Keaeh, where a
numlier of them own property and
spend several weeks during the
summer, listening to the murmuring
of the sea and watching the autlcs
of the bewitching luerniald, they
have been going about with know
ing winks indicative of gome happen
ing that their brother townsmen,
who cannot enjoy the luxury of a
summer at the seashore, were un
acquainted with.
As all things come to an end. how
ever, ami two persons caunot keep
a secret, the occasion for vague
atiswers from Cannon I'.eachites has
been exploded. The story Is some
thing like this:
Among the colony at the leneh
was ex-Mayor Dick McDonald, taking
well-earned recreation. With others,
the doughty Scotsman engaged In
the pleasant pursuit of fishing. Luck
was against h'u) day after day, and
he was the recipient of much good
natured JoUying. Believing that the
rest of the party were .lonahing his
efforts in the piscatorial line, Mac de
cided to sidestep them on the next
tishlug excursion, and slipped off by
himself, taking up his position on a
rocky promontory made accessible
only at low tide.
There he settled down comfortably,
halting his hook with extra caw,
and, with the patience and dexterity
of a true disciple of Isaac Walton,

Time passed, but still the lone fish
erman dreamed on (,f landing a big
one. The afteri n shadows deep
ened and night fell. The chill air
finally caused the Apple City man to
take notice and look around. With
n start he saw that the old proverb
was unerring, that time and tide
waits for no man," and that he was
marooned on his rocky perch. The
wind came up, the billows rolled aud
the surf struck against the rock,
drenching him at every point.
In the evening his friends, man
like, had returned about the time
supper was sizzling In the pan. They
waned ror Dick to appear, casting
eyes, sharpened by hunger, up and
uown the beach. Xo slirn of his nn
proach, however, was evident, and
supper was served.
Hours sped by, and finally, becom
ing alarmed, the friends of the miss.
Ing fisherman, supplied with lan
terns, started a search. Oolng In thi
direction they had heard of his tak
ing, they shouted as they went along.
At last, fur down the beach, thev
heard a fulnt answer and presently a
tremendous splashing. Holding their
lanterns aloft, the searchers saw the
figure of their friend coming through
water up to his waist, soaked, but
unharmed and smiling.
The reader will no doubt say:
"Very good, but how about the fish;
did he get any?1' As to this, we are
mum; we didn't stop to Inquire.

PICTURE OF MT. HOOD
MASTERPIECE OF ART
What Is undoubtedly the finest
palutlngever executed of .Mt. Hood,
and possibly the finest of a mountain
peak ever portrayed In this county.
Is now reposing In the studio of Kd
ward Hill, the eastern attlst, who
has been spending the summer at
Hood Klver. Mr. Hill lived for six
weeks In the Mt. Hood country,
studying Ids subject. The canvas Is
a large one, being liOx.'IS Inches, and
depicts the grand old mountain In
the light of a summer sunrise. The
U'autlful coloring on the snow and
rugged rocks at this time of a sum
mer's day Is exquisitely portrayed,
as well as the shape and other feat
ures of this spectacular peak. In the
middle foreground can be seen far
down In the valley the clear, green-
tinted waters of the winding Hood
Klver. while the green-timbered
mountain slopes In the near fore
ground, and the shadows around
the base of the mountain, not yet
penetrated by the first light of morn
ing, are worked out with the Inspi
ration of the master artist, who sees

nature Iri her inmost glories. Apart
from the combination of rare color
ing ami technique, the subject Is one
of such grandeur that It Impresses
and holds the attention of the be
holder closely. The work will live
long In the annals of landscape
painting and become more treasured
with the passage of time.
To get In touch with his subject
the artist took up a position near
the mountain and for three weeks
arose before sunrise to get the exact
light, coloring and atmosphere for
this big work of art, und anybody
who sees the picture readily con
cludes that he succeeded most ad
mirably. The picture Is not finite
finished, although to the eye of the
ordinary observer it needs nothing
to make It more complete.
It Is expected that Mr. Hill will
later exhibit the picture In Portland,
and there Is n'o doubt that It will in-
received there with true enthusiasm,
not only by the public, but by art
lovers and critics us well. The paint
ing Is of such value to Oregon on
account of Its local Interest, as well
as a work of art, that It should be
purchased by public funds and lie
come the property of the state at
large.
