When the broken flange permitted
a box car to leave the track an the

Creek bridge, two bents of the struc
ture were knocked down. Into this
gap Ave cars plunged before the train
stoppetl, four piled up at the east end
of the bridge. Engineer McUuIre, on
engine 521, and conductor Zlrbel had
charge of the train.

Death of (ieo. P. Crowell

er's most highly esteemed citizens,
and a pioneer resident here of many
years standing, died at his home lit
this city, Tuesday, Sept. 5. after a
protracted Illness. The cause of Mr.
( rowell's death was paralysis.
Mr. Crowell was born at Orange.
N. J., In ls:f'., served through the Civ
il Wur in Company D, of the Eighth
New Jersey Keglment. After the
war he located In MorrlstowD, Tenn.
Development of the Northwestern
country had scarcely legun when
Mr. Crowell arrived on the Coast.
His first few years here were spent
on Government surveys. He accom
panied E. L. Smith oti the survey of
the boundary line between Canada
and the Lotted States and later In sur
veys lu different parts of Oregon. Mr.
Smith, soon after the surveys were
made, established one of the first
stores in the Hood Kiver valley, and
Mr. Crowell was one of the first
clerks. He later purchased the store.
He retired from the business a nutu
Iht of years ago.
He Is survived by his wife whose
name was formerly Marybeth English
and Miss Carrie Crowell", his sister.
The funeral of Mr. Crowell was held
at two o'clock Thursday afternoon
from his late residence, services being
conducted by Kev. E. A. Harris, of
Klverslde Congregational Church.
The funeral was largely attended,
and the burial service was tu charge
of members of Can by l'ost. Grand
Army of the Kepublic. liurlal was
In Idlewllde Cemetery.
The following tribute to Mr. Crow

Kiver, deserves more thau a passing
notice. Kev. E. A. Harris, In his elo
quent address at the funeral services
depicted the character of deceased
in a manner pleasing to old-timers
who listened to the address. All
who knew (ieo. 1. Crowell can
give testimony to his upright char
acter, his honesty, his Christian for-ttearance-
For years he was the
leading merchant of Hood Kiver.
During the hard times In Hood Kiver

was left to rot on the vines b"cause
of the Hood In the Columbia that
washed out the railroad, (ieo. I'.
Crowell extended credit to the suffer
ers, and no one knows how many
families were tided over by htm dur
ing that disastrous year.

depository for any surplus money
the more fortunate of our citizens ac
cumulated. He was our banker, and
no man ever lost a dollar through
(ieo. I. Crowell. While he was our
only notary public, no one was ever
charged a cent for his legal services
"As honest as (ieorge Crowell" got
to be a by-word with those who
knew htm. Ky honesty. Industry
anil perseverenee his life was made
successful.
His declining years were spent In
one of the most beautiful homes In
Hood Kiver. He rounded out his
three score yenrs and ten, and more,
and was followed to the grave by a
concourse of his fellow citizens who
sincerely mourned his passing away.
The record of (ieo. 1'. Crowell as a
soldier was one to be proud of. It Is
the wish of the comrades of Can by
Lost that the following mention of
(ieo. 1'. ( rowell's bravery at the bat
tle of Williamsburg, Va., 1 pub
lished tn our local papers. The chap
lain of the Mil New Jersey regiment.
In which Crowell served, wrote to
his home paper, the Newark Mer
cury of May l'7, an account of
the battle, and gave Incidents and
honorable mention where found
worthy. He wrote:
'Private (ieorge I'. Crowell of Com
pany D, as our line of battle, during
a desperate assault oi me enemy,
was ordered to be formed anew
some eight leet Pack, louili nlmsell
between the tire of our regiment and
that of the enemy. He had not heard
the order to fall back, so Intent was
he In tiring his gun. Knt when he
comprehended his p isition, lie coolly
laced his back to a tree, to shelter
himself from our tire, and, face to the
enemy, exposeii to almost certain I
deatli, he there maintained his posl-1
tlon, constantly tiring until the en
emy was repulsed and a new line
formed by our regiment."
