The Railroad Strike The question of greatest pub lic importance at present is the threatened railroad strike. A struirjrle for supremacy between the railroads and their employes, involving hampered transporta tion facilities, pecuniary losses to both parties and probable vio lence and bloodshed, should be avoided if possible. The strike situation is now one that involves all sections of the country direct ly or indirectly, and has become greater in scope than any con tention that has heretofore arisen between the railroads and their employes on the Pacific coast. Of late years the strike feature of lab'.r unions has potten to be a jKiwerful weapon in the hands of labor leaders, who wield it in many instances unscrupulously. The ripht and need of labor to orpanize is unquestioned, and, used lepitimately, the power thus secured will have the sup port of the public. With the fed eration of labor unions, however, a political machine has been ef fected in the hipher councils of the orpanizations that is fast rob binp the rank and file of labor unions of their influence and in itiative, and is, in many in stances, plunpinp them into dis astrous consequences. Also, it is no secret that officers in exec utive positions in labor orpaniza tions have become wealthy after a few years of rule durinp which they have been identified with strikes. It is not difficult to point out the source of this sudden wealth, after handlinp strike funds and conducting negotia tions with the corporations. As a matter of fact the labor leader has come to be looked upon with suspicion, and no where is suspicion more rife than in the membership of the organ izations. Calling a widespread strike, with present business and indus trial conditions, cannot be looked upon as anything but unwise. It is possible that the advanced step being taken by labor is to avoid &n anticipated cut in wages, with a final compromise to main tain present wage conditions. On the other hand, the railroad com panies, by threatening to reduce their forces, may be playing pol itics in advance of the coming presidential election. What the real basis on which either party to the controversy is willing to settle may be, is a matter of conjecture. It is ob vious, however, that the rail roads have decided to make a de termined stand and that they are in a better position to do so than at any time for several years. It would seem, therefore, that a settlement along present condi tions is advisable. History And The Apple Putting aside the legend of the apple as Kxhibit A in the Adam and Eve episode a number of Chicago College professors, who have l'en investigating the mat ter, state that this now most pop ular fruit is of very ancient ori gin. One professor stated that he luul authentic investigations showing that carbonized apples fmm 5. fXX) to 7.WH) years old have U-en found in the mud of the stone age, while again pieces which have been apparently cut for drying have leen discovered beneath the ruins of the lake dwellers. It is known that apples had U'cn introduced into Great Brit ain before the Unman conquest and spread over the entire is land by the end of the third cen tury. In lCLD apple seeds were brought over to New England and by loofi a fairly large or chard was planted in Rhode Is land. From the eastern states apple growing finally extended to the Pacific coast and now the finest apples that are grown in the world are produced in the North west. The many forms in which the apple can be served makes it the most used and valuable of fruits, and with the coming of cold storage it is destined to be consumed largely in tropical as well as temperate climates. To the minds and palates of the Anglo Saxon race the apple stands pre eminent and its literature teems with historical and romantic in cidents in which this legendary forbidden fruit is the central fig ure. If the ancients, as asserted by the Chicago professors, were fortunate enough to tickle their palates with this glorious fruit, what need of nightingales' tongues and other now impos sible delicacies.
