The Baseball Series
another column Manaper
In
Geo.
P. Christy, manaper of the
Heights Baseball Team, criticises
the article which appeared in the
News in repanl to the wind-up
of the baseball series between
the League and the Heights
teams.
In explanation of the action in
announcing that another pame
would Ik1 played at the conclu
sion of the fifth contest he states
that the contract called for five
pames to be played on dates
which were all on Sunday, and
that the pame, therefore, played
on Wednesday was not one of
the series.
This beinp the case an an
nouncement should have been
made the day this pame was
played which would have entire
ly eliminated any misunderstand
ing that arose later. The News
was allowed to announce from
week to week that the next pame
would be the succeeding one of
the series and was entirely un
aware of any contract to the con
trary. Apart from seeing a
good series and the best team
win, the News was not inter
ested. If another series is arranged
the public should be made aware
of the exact conditions under
which the games are to be
played, in which event there can
be no fault finding.
Pensioning Railroad Employes
The justice of establishing a
peusion system for railroad em
ployes is becoming more widely
recognized. Since the Pennsyl
vania Railroad inaugurated the
idea a decade or more ago it has
been adopted by a number of the
large systems throughout the
United States, among which is
the Southern Pacific.
Since the inauguration of the
Pension Department on this line,
which took place January 1,
1903, nearly one million dollars
has been voluntarily disbursed
among the retired employes of
that corporation. The precise
amount is $850,007.70.
The total disbursements for
the month of June, 1911, were
$14,010.35. This was divided
among 420 men and women, re
tired employes of the Southern
Pacific Company. The total dis
bursements lor the fiscal year
ending June 30, 1911, were $168,-
000.20.
Since the organization of the
Pension Department the South
ern Pacific Company has pen
sioned 610 of its employes. The
employes are not required to con
tribute anything toward the Pen
sion fund, all payments being
made out of the General Funds
of the railroad company.
'I hrows Bourne Overboard
Senator Liourne has put his
nose out of joint with the Jour
nal because he voted against th
Farmers' free list.
"The bill," says the Journal,
"is a farmers' measure, and Ore
gon a farmers' state. It places
agricultural implements on the
free list, and why they should be
on the free list was fully dis
closed by the exposures of the
harvester trust by the Stanley
investigating committee."
If this were the only impeach
ment that could be found against
Senator Bourne, the Journal
would be making much ado about
nothing. As a matter of fact,
putting agricultural implements
on the free list is about the last
thing that could make any differ
ence to the American people.
The l.'nited States is so far ahead
of any other country in the
world in the manufacture of ag
ricultural implements that com
Ietition is practically nil. It
would seem that the Journal has
been casting aKmt for an excuse
to throw the vociferous direct
primary senator overboard, and
has grabbed at a straw. It
might better oppose Bourne on
general principles. What we
want on the free list is ham and
eggs.
Mr. I,afferty
Abraham Walter LatTerty,
Congressman from the Second
Oregon District, has succeeded
in covering himself with odium
at me rsationai tapuai. u me
press dispatches be correct Mr.
Lafferty has been devoting his
energies more toward attempts
to captivate the fair sex than is
seemly for a statesman particu
larly a statesman chosen to this
high office through the channels
of the direct primary-anti-cor-rupt
practices route. Such a
lapse of moral stamina as Mr.
Lafferty is charged with could
only be expected from a dyed-in
the-Aool machine politician. Of
course, in tnis day ot amnities
and soul-mates it is possible that
the photopraph of the young lady
on whom the former Missourian
pazed, caused a yearning that he
could not overcome but then
there are dignified and respect
able methods of introduction for
even an obscure congressman.
An attempt to redeem some of
the promises made by Lafferty
to his constituents previous to
his election, would undoubtedly
be more appreciated than any
success he may attain as a Don
Juan.
County Road Bonding
Jackson county has taken the
good roads problem by the horns
and proposes to hold an election
to vote on the question of bond
ing for road improvement. The
enterprise shown by the county
commissioners and citizens of
that county will, without ques
tion, have the approval of those
sincerely interested in better
highways. If no legal obstacles
ensue, the course pursued by
this progressive Southern Ore
gon county will no doubt be
adopted by other counties. The
main objection to the plan, if
there really be any, is whether
the bonds can be sold. In the
absence of definite authority to
hold the election this is likely to
prove a stumbling block.
The Reciprocity Treaty
The reciprocity bill made a law
by Congress, and which it is ex
pected will be accepted by Can
ada, is an enigma, as far as the
rank and file of the American
people are concerned. Until the
contents of the bill, or a compre-.
hensive summary of it, is made
available in public print, just
how its provisions will affect
the masses is a conjecture. In
the last hours of the debate on the
bill in the Senate it would seem
that whatever benefits the aver
age citizen should receive were
killed in the amendments which
were voted down. The effect of
the treaty on the industrial and
agricultural interests of the coun
try will therefore be awaited
with interest.

CONTRARY TO REPORTS
Contrary to statements of a llht

that reports which come from the

that the crop this year would be
