The Hood Klver court states that
drivers of automobiles within the
county bounds must observe the
speed law. Twenty have leen timed
on the west side macadum road and
bare been found exceeding the speed
limit, which is 2.1 miles per hour.
Warrants for the arrest of the
drivers are now In the hands of the
authorities. A portion of the new
macadam road over which the speed
ing Is done is being ruined and the
court proposes to put an end to the
process.
Several citizens appointed by the
court have tieen along the road with
their stop watches and tape meas
ures, and as a result the 20 drivers
caught will le put on the carpet.
The cases are In the hands of Dep
uty District Attorney Hartwlg, and
It is said they will be presented to
the grand jury which meets next
Monday.

FRANK FERGUSON
BELIEVED MURDERED
That Frank Ferguson, a popular
young man rf The Dalles, lias met
, foul play or a serious accident. Is the
belief of his friends and relatives, as
well as the police. Ferguson was
last seen near a cigar store,
where there Is a pool and billiard
; room, about 12 o'clock last Sunday
night. A memlier of the night police
force found a hut In the street near
there a little later, which has now
! been Identified as the property of the
missing man. It appears that the
, wearer of the hat was struck over
the head with a large bolt, for
marks which appear to be Imlenta-
' tlons of the threads are still on the
! hat.
That Ferguson was not Intending
to leave the city Is shown by the fact
that ills money and watch were left
at home and nearly a month's wages
were left undrawn at the Wasco
warehouse mill, where lie was em
ployed.
The missing man has a wife and a
small child at The Dalles, as well as
parents and many other relatives.
Ferguson was a inemlcr of The
Dalles baseball team and visited
Hood Klver frequently, lelng well
known here.
HANDLING APPLES AND PEARS
We have handled a large propor
tion of the strawberry crop, over
forty carloads, licsldes large express
shipments. This expression of con
fidence by so many growers In our fa
cilities for marketing fruit from this
district Is very gratifying and fully
appreciated by us.
We will continue with small fruits,
and follow with pears ami apples.
We are making ncclnl arrangements
for handling pears by the most ap
proved methods to secure their ar
rival on the markets In the best pos
sll.le condition.
Last year our early returns for ap
ples, which covered about the (uan
tlty we expected to handle when we
tiegnn shipping, were th highest re
ported by any apple shippers. This
year we will handle a limited quan
tity for those growers who will ii r
range with us early for handling
their apples, and furnish estimates of
quantities and varieties In time for
us to arrange for marketing them
properly. It Is unjust to those grow
ers who make arrang-mcnts early
with us to handle their apples If we
allow others to come in with their
crops so late In tin; season that tin-
best markets are supplied with np
ples from other districts.
