The Ellis families have been residents
of this valley for twenty-three years
and this Is their first move, having
disposed of their land Interests here.
Relieving that a woman and her
children had fallen over the cliff and
onto the rocks, was the hnllunicatlon
of a man named F. La wall, of Poat
land, who was frantically trying to
make a rescue In the rocks above the
Cooks road from the ferry. After a
chase ano considerable maneuvering
over rocks, Frank Groshong finally
captured him, flagged the passenger
train aud took htm to Goldendale,
where he was held until his brother
arrived from Portland to care for him

Prediction of a Scientist and Its Re
markable Verification.
When a mathematical astronomer In
Tarls gave a Berlin observatory a
search warrant for a new planet and.
turning his telescope as directed, the
Berlin observer found the previously
unknown planet all the world won
dered. Equally remarkable have been
a prediction and its verification in the
history of modern chemistry. Grading
the known elements of nature accord
ing to the weight of their respective
atoms, It was observed that the ele
ments, some seventy or more in num
ber, formed a scale marked by period
icity like the scale In music. This
periodic law In the hand of genius be
came an instrument of research. It
was in 1S71 that Mendeleef, the Rus
sian chemist, in forming the acale of
elements, found it necessary to leave
three spaces vacant for undiscovered
elements to make his table true.
Neither did he hesitate to predict
the properties which these element
should possess when discovered. It
was as If an astrologer ahould inform
you that yon would meet pome time In
your life three men and that with the
utmost particularity he told you their
respective physical weights, the color
of their hair, the size of hat, shoe and
glove worn by each and. In a word,
all the habits of mind and body suf
ficient to discriminate them positively
