location of the new structure, which is
to 1 knowu as the Woolworth build
ing, Is the southwest corner of Broad
way and Turk place. The ground upon
which it will stand was acquired at a
cost of $2,000,000, and it Is estimated
that the building itself will cost ap
proximately $5,000.0(10.
Like many of the more modern sky
scrapers In New York, the Woolworth
building will seek to apply old recog
nized forms of architecture to new con
ditions. The architect has discarded
the familiar renaissance type nnd will
treat the facade In Gothic. He be
lieves he has worked out a design that
will stand as an example of the archi
tectural possibilities in lofty steel con
struction. In order to support the tre
mendous weight of forty-five stories it
will lie necessary to carry the founda
tion down to liedrock, a depth of prob
ably 100 feet lielow the street.
Among other things, the plan calls
for a large swimming pool In .the base
ment, nnd It Is likely that there will
also be a gymuasium.
