Thuck aru, Htatloned at Berlin, Germany, reports that the Pacific Northwest bus apples are rapidly gaining fuvi over barreled apples In the Father land. The consul says: "American apples are much appre olated In Germany and are bought bv nil classes of people. The most formidable competitor of the Amerl can fruit In the German market Is the apple that comes from the Austrian Tyrol, one of which enjoys a well deserved and longstanding reouta tlon for quality and flavor. There Is no doubt, however, that the sale of American apples In this country could le greatly extended If shippers In the United StaU's would be more diligent In the selection and packing of fruit Intended for this market. In the opinion of German fruit dealers more favorable prices could be ob tatned for the American fruit if It were more carefully graded, better selected and packed In cases like the apples Imported from the Tyrol When packed In this manner the fruit would stand ths Journey much bet tr. would decay less rupldly and could be more readily Inspected." The following Is a translation of a letter received from a fruit broker of the Central Market, Berlin, which was written In answer to a list of Interrogatories sent from Consul Thnckara: "During the past season American apples In barrels have arrived In Ber lin budly damaged, owing to the careless manner In whi'jh the fruit was packed. American shippers do not use the same care in sorting the apples as In former years. In most cases the barrels contain apples of three or four different sizes and vary Ing greatly In appearance. The toj layers are good, while the middle and bottom rows are very different, both In size and quality. 'Apples are Imported Into Ger many packed both In boxes and In barrels, but for the pant two years the boxes have tieen preferred, as the fruit thus packed was received In better condition and the apples were finer. During the seasons of 1109-10 and 1910 11 apples packed In boxes were Imported from the states of Or egon and Washington. The fruit was excellent and well graded. Sorting the apples must naturally le done by the packer, as the German Importer should not Ik; compelled to pay duties and freight on unsorted apples, and, ttesldes. Inferior fruit should remain In the I'nlted States High-grade apples packed In boxes should lie wrapped In paper. "I'p to the present time California apples hn?e been received here only lu boxes. While they excel In qual ity the boxed apples from eastern states, the pocking and quality of the Oregon and Washington fruit were suierlor. In my opinion the German trade In American barrel apples will decrease from year to year on account of the faulty pack Ing and grading of the fruit. I am also of the opinion that the Imports of American apples Into this country would Increase enormously If th' prevailing defects could be eliminated and the American shippers would send only apples In good condition and free from San .lose scale." MUST DO THEIR OWN ICING AS WELL AS PRE-COOUNG An additional order has been Is sued by the Interstate Commerce Commission covering the case of the pre-coollng by shippers of California citrus fruits. By this later ruling the shippers, In order to avail them selves of the reduction In pre-coollng charges on oning" and lemons from $30 to $7..ri0ncnr, recently made by the commission, must, In addition to doing their own pre-coollng, also do their own Icing. It Is very dillicult to obtain and keep Ice In Southern California. It. of course, would be possible for the, California Fruit Growers' exchange to establish its own Ice manufacturing plant, as on shipments of 1.1, loo to IM.(XM) cars an nually, the saving on the pre-coollug charge would run from $'tVi,(HXi to $4.i0,000. Smaller shippers, however, could not afford to own their own Ice plants. This late ruling may be found to work to the nil vantage of the exchange. BMs Invited Sealed bids will lie received until noon April ft, 1IU1, at my office at Hood Hlver, Ore., for the construc tion of thire (H) miles or more of Macndam Koad In Hood Hlver coun ty. Speclllcnt Ions can lie seen and particulars learned alter Monday, March '.1 lull, at my olllce. Illght reserved to reject any and all bids. liKOHuK I). Cl I.MKK l'SO, tf County Judge. FAVORS CENTRAL . SELUNG AGENCY One of the largest KuglUli buyers of northwest apples has strongly en dorsed the proposed cent nil M-llIng ugency. He says that ttiu li an or ganization would simplify matters considerably for exporter. This class of trade Is Important, because It is using more aud more of the northwest's hlghgrade fruit each year. He said that now the rdrelgn buyer Is put to a large expense by having to send agents to this coun try each sprlug to get a line on the crop and again In the fall to buy Thls exporter points out that the ex change would be the means of cut ting down the foreign buyers' ex penses and regulate other conditions now unsatisfactory. In all of the northwest fruit, dis tricts the central selling agency scheme Is being discussed at length and reports are being received that It will gain many converts. Just what action the big buyers on the Atlantic coust would take In re gard to the foreign buyers under these circumstances Is not known, but there Is no doubt that they would put up a fight agaitixt taking the handling of the fruit away from them. Apple Market Duller Tha latest New York apple report says: I he boxea apple market shows no Improvement. In fact, If anything, It Is worse. Prices ure not good nud demand is exceptionally disappointing. There Is such a large percentage of large apples here that these are at a standstill and are practically unsalable. Small fruit Is at a premium, and Instead of bring ing less than the large apples, brings' as much and In some Instances more. The best large Spltzenburgs are sell ing at $1.50(12, w hile small fruit of the same quality and variety Is go ing at $l.7Wj2. The consumption during February was quite heavy, as there were used here and shipped abroad durlug that month Il'I.ikKJ boxes. Thla leaves about 140,000 b jxes In the warehouses In New York and the Immediate vicinity, which would not be too great a quantity to ls consumed during March and April if the fruit was In the liest con dition, tjulte a few of the apples held are coining out of storage soft, and this is hurting the prices. ( alifornla apples are selling 1.4.Vj l.l.'i, which means a net back f. o. b. of (i.Vi SV. Most of these apples were purchased around $sVn$l, so that It can Ik' seen that there Is verv little money In the deal for anybody.
